The Ashrama of the Ramakrishna Mission in Jammu was in fact, started by Br. Shakti Chaitanya Maharaj in the year 1964. He was a disciple of Swami Ashokananda of Nag Dandi Ashram of Kashmir. He started the Ashrama with the sole purpose of handing it over to Ramakrishna Mission. He did a lot of Tapasya and prayed to Bhagawan Shri Ramakrishna to accept this Ashrama. He used to live alone in this Ashrama even at the ripe old age of 90 years. When his devotees would force him to keep one Sevak to attend him, he would reply - This Ashrama belongs to Shri Ramakrishna and I am his watchman. If I am the watchman, (pointing to the Sevak) then who are you? He would not allow anybody to stay with him. Finally, in the year 2000 Ramakrishna Mission accepted this Ashrama. Swami Girijeshananda became the first Secretary of the Ashrama. Shakti Chaitanya Maharaj passed away the very next year and left an indelible mark of austere practices of tyaga (renunciation) and bhakti devotion to God in the minds of the devotees. We pay high tributes to him always. Then Swami Girijeshanandaji Maharaj took upon himself the responsibility of developing this Ashrama. He, himself living in a temporary structure, built a beautiful guest house for the devotees. Then he completed the construction of a small Shrine and Prayer Hall and the building for the accommodation of monastic members. Next thing he built was the Medical Center of the area of 20,000 sq. ft. Rev. Maharaj started the construction of the Scholars' House and it was completed in 2011 which was then inaugurated by Srimat Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, then one of the Vice-Presidents of the Ramakrishna Order. Swami Girijeshanandaji due to incessant flow of hard works, his health broke down and attained Mahasamadhi in December 2013. Swami Nirantarananda took over the responsibility of this Ashrama in 2014. He started finishing the half-done projects which had been halted due to Girijeshananda Maharaj's demise. The dining hall, kitchen and monks' quarters were renovated in 2015. The Cultural and Educational center was established in the 2017. A new auditorium, Swami Vivekananda Auditorium was inaugurated in 2018.

We specifically visited the medical centre here. Amazing work that they do for the poor by providing cheap and good medical support.
