Udupi Indian Vegetarian & Vegan Cuisine - Indian restaurant in Tempe - 1636 N Scottsdale Rd, USA

I got take out for lunch from Udupi. I did have a difficult time putting an order through over the phone so I decided to just drive in. The smells when I entered were amazing. The place is decorated simply and is u assuming but had a quiet and cozy feel to it. I was welcomed by a friendly staff member shortly after arriving and was able to ask a couple questions and place my order. While waiting for my food to be cooked, it was done fresh, I checked out the buffet. It looked and smelled delicious and was well stocked. I'll be back to try this another time and I'd like to dine in. The food was delicious and had loads of flavor.

Latest update: whatever tip you add to the bill and pay by card goes to the owner and not to the servers. So if you like to tip the server in case service was good, pay cash. May be this is the reason I always see different staff most of the time I go there. Went there for dinner. Latest video will show that the quality of the food has degraded drastically. Sambhar is now just spicy liquid with just garam masala in it with one carrot piece. They only have one person making tea so wait time for tea is almost 20-30 minutes. I waited almost 30 minutes for the food and 15 minutes for them to get the order despite place being empty. Past: Food is good but facility is understaffed. This impacts their service level. Manager at this location needs to get the staffing on point. I really like the food here. Staff is super friendly and attentive. I understand the staffs trouble in attending to all the table at once with short numbers in servers. Reduction of 2 start for the management not the staff, to be clear.

This is tough.  The server was very friendly.  The food was very good.  The problem we had was the timing on food delivery.  My daughter got her appetizer and at the same time my mom got her meal.   10 minutes later her husband got his meal.  5 more minutes and daughter got her meal.  5 more minutes and I got my meal.  Now they were not busy at all.  Less than 10 others in restaurant.  Not sure what the issue with kitchen was.   I had one of the crepes.   The photos make it look tiny like a French crepe.  Look at my  photo to see it was nearly two feet long and five inches wide. It is mostly hollow, and being that size I am glad.  For someone not familiar with the cuisine, I was surprised.

Very tasty dosas freshly prepared and delivered with two types of Chutneys ( Coconut and Tomato spice) and sambhar! Regular Rava Dosa was crispy and the special rava masala was spicy! Ghee Masala Dosa was really awesome and we loved it so much. Will go back soon to dine in and taste other South Indian dishes. Wish they add a lighted name board at the front. We had difficulty locating the restaurant and hope they fix it soon. Ambience in side the restaurant was really good and seating arrangements were clean and tidy. Loved the decorations inside. Customer service was good!

Oh.My.Goodness. Vegan heaven. Super flavorful, excellent portion, very reasonable- almost too cheap for its quality -delicious meal!! We ( two adults) arrived mid afternoon yesterday to an empty restaurant and we were served very promptly. We would have ordered more, but the waiter ( probably one of the cook) was a little concerned , hahaha and stopped us. 4 appetizers and 2 house specials. We couldn’t finished all, so we took home leftovers, for our great delight today !!

Have been here multiple times. Initially it was fine. But in my last 2 visits, I was really disappointed with the kind of service they have provided. Ordered the noodles and they were undercooked, bland and had no spices at all. When asked the server, she said that it’s for the kids. And no where in the menu are the noodles mentioned under kids section. Also, who would like their kid to eat undercooked noodles? Weird! Moreover, the quality of food in general was also not up to the mark. Plus, an extremely slow service where we had to constantly remind them of our order for almost 45 minutes.

As of May 13,2019 We had a lunch buffet today and I am not really satisfied with it. Quality of food still remains ok like last time. But, I am disappointed with the items available. Although a vegetarian buffet, it could be restricted with the available dishes, yet could have had order-based ones like Chana-batura or Poori masala or similar house specials. But this could be a personal interest. For today, I did like the Roti and paneer butter masala, and the vegetable biriyani! Tasty :) Over that, i just noticed that the final receipt has a stunning "18%" service charge over the base rate. So the advertised 9$ special is equivalent to a 11$regular buffet (excluding regular tax). I don't if this is a mandatory rule or something added by the restaurant. But, I haven't noticed it in other restaurants and so, no comments. Just a heads up. As of April 23,2019 The food experience was good. We had chana batura and special rava dosai. I liked the dosai with one of the best sambars that I have tried out here in Tempe :D Chana masala had a different flavour and is appreciable. I have put a photo of the dosai... It's huge !!! So you may find it share-worthy with one of your friends unless you are thinking of the take-home box :) I was not completely satisfied with the service due to the missing glass of water which was not offered. Otherwise, the staff were cheerful. The ambience was ok and the indoors was clean. The cost is on the average end of the general restaurant rates, .Mostly in the 10$ range.

I was visiting Scottsdale for a week from Denver, CO. I went to Udupi restaurant twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. I got Poori, paneer butter masala and rice-sambar. All of them were very tasty. For lunch I tried their buffet. It was one of the best Indian buffets I have had in US. Even the Uber driver who drove me to the restaurant gave me good reviews, he said “ you’re in a for treat here for sure” 😀 which turned it to be true. The staff was very friendly and courteous.
