Situated next to the Jain temple in Lonar village outside the Lonar lake sanctuary. The temple was built during the rule of the Chalukya dynasty that ruled central and Sothern India between 6th and 12 Century A.D. There are three chambers inside the temple and in the last dark chamber is a four foot idol of Lord Vishnu. This temple is built in the form of an asymmetrical star and has carvings on its exterior. This temple built with 7 layers of rock stacked and locked with each other. This temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is located about 2 kms from the Lonar crater. Not many people visit it, making it an even more appealing place for tourists that prefer places to themselves. If you love and appreciate ancient architecture- you should not miss to visit this place !
Excellent temple. Has a lot of history associated with it. Look for a guy named ( caretaker) Anil. He will offer a lot of historical importance. Temple closes ar 6 PM. Intricate carvings. Don't miss the stone that upon hitting rings like a bell.
Very old temple around 1200 years. Outside walls & inside interior is having beautiful carvings still in good condition. The temple resembles to famous sun temple of Konark. The temple is of Sri Vishnu who killed Lavnasur demon here.
Great Architecture. 9th Century Structure. Destroyed by Mughals. But restored. Must Visit.
This is a beautiful old temple dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu. It is decorated with beautiful sculptures carved in stone on all sides. Many of the carvings are damaged by those outsiders who attacked and spoilt many other temples in India. A local guide was a great help in showing many intricacies of the carvings, significance of many of the carvings in and around the temple. It is highly recommended to get such a help.
Along with being famous for a crater that was formed over 50,000 years ago due to the collision of a meteorite on the surface of the region, Lonar is also famous for its rich natural heritage. Lonar is a mesmerizingly beautiful place famous for the Lonar crater and the lake formed due to a meteorite hitting the earth around 52, 000 years ago. This 6,000 feet wide and 500 feet deep lake is, therefore, an important source of scientific research and educational importance. It is the only salt water lake in the basaltic rock in the world. The area is also surrounded by a lot of flora and fauna which makes the place even more beautiful. There is also a famous Gomukh temple located at the boundary of the lake where snakes and other animals like fox, mongoose, deers can be spotted. Daitya Sudan temple, another temple located in Lonar is very famous for its architectural style as it reminds of the world famous Khajuraho temples.
One of the most underrated and undervalued temple I have seen. Once upon a time stood there to rival Konark temple. Even though clean and well maintained, not promoted by MTDC. The way to visit to this place is narrow gully and most tourist ignore this place . I will recommend to visit this place and see it to believe. We used a guide to see most Lonar places and it was worth it.
