World's Largest Ball Of Twine - Historical landmark in Darwin - 1st St, USA

Easy viewing at any hour, even when the welcome center is closed. Good info on the nearby plaque. Only stayed for about ten minutes, but still worth the trip for this fan of both Weird Al and unusual attractions.

Depending on the yardstick you use, this could be the World's Largest Ball of Twine. There are a few contenders including one in Kansas and another in Missouri. This one makes the claim by starting that it's the largest that was built by a single person. That works for me! It is 12 feet in diameter has a circumference of 40 feet and and weighs 17,400 pounds. It's located here in Francis A. Johnson Square as that's the man who spent four hours a day for 29 years doing the wrapping. And it held the title for "biggest ball of twine" from 1979 until 1994. There is a museum here and the ball of twine itself is inside a glass shed to keep it from being damaged. There is plenty of parking, there are some restaurants nearby and it is otherwise pretty far from the Interstate. Make the special trip!

“This here is what America’s all about” Went here as a mini road trip with my partner. Missed the gift shop by an hour or so but it was worth coming here nonetheless. It’s quaint, simple, and impressive all at once. And yknow what? I’ll be coming back to it again soon enough!

This was probably one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had. The pure joy of this ball of twine will light up your eyes beyond belief. It took the guy who made this a good while, and it's showcased in such a pristine way. Sarcasm aside, it is a really fun thing to head to Darwin, MN (don't blink or you will miss the town) and see!

Just one of those things that everyone should see. They’ve got a great area set up for the twine ball. Unfortunately, the gift shop was closed.

We came across this by accident, what a fun find! Loved all the Weird Al photos and articles, as well as the little museum on site!

An absolute must stop if you're in the area. The massive ball itself is outside so can be seen all the time. The inside shop is a neat little museum showcasing history of the Twine ball, the creator, and the city of Darwin. Inside the shop is a small selection of clothing and trinkets. Shirts, sweatshirts, hats, pencils, postcards, starter twine ball, and more. Lots of fun novelty items! Cash and check only, no credit cards.

With being from the area the twine ball is something you get used to seeing but talk about a feat for one person to accomplish. I remember the excitement when it was removed from his shed just outside of Darwin on hwy 12 to its new home on main Street Darwin. This is a place that is very frequently visited by people passing through. There is a mail box to leave your name and where you are from which is fun to flip through. There is also a cool museum and gift shop that is open occasionally. If you're passing by stop and get your photo taken, leave a note on where you're from and where you're headed. While your there imagine the time and dedication it took for one man to not only collect all of the twine needed but to roll it, store it and maintain it. It really is something to see
