To learn so much about this moment in history and be able to see the monument in honor of the Marines that rose the flag on that day in person it is just even more impactful.
When you return back into Arlington, not far from the entrance, one of the Marines that raised the flag is buried not far by.
For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to come here. The Marine Corps was and is a certain determinant in my life. I served as a paratrooper myself and I know something about the hardships of service. This place is one of many places where the dedication to the cause, the courage of these people and the fact that many of them paid the highest price were appreciated. I honor you.
Most people will recognize this iconic statue from pictures they may have seen online or somewhere in the media. However, this is mainly a tribute to all marines that have served and given their lives to the US since 1775. The actual stance is from the victory of Iwo Jima, where the marines were able to raise a flag on Mount Suribachi. I was surprised at how enormous the statue was when I was looking from the bottom. Nevertheless, it’s a must see for everyone coming to visit DC. It’s farther from the more famous memorials. If you’re driving, they do have some parking spots in front.
We went on a week day and parking was easy. I've lived in Northern VA my whole life and this was my 1st visit. Of course I had seen pictures, but wow. Seeing this in person was amazing! There's a nice walkway around the area. And you get an amazing view of the DC monuments as well!
A must see! Located next to Arlington National Cemetery. Easy parking. Low traffic area. Great photo opportunity. Grass and a few trees to run around in.
Kind of a pain to get to the parking area but it's worth it. It's a towering monument to the Marine Corps. And it has a great of the Washington monument and the Capitol building.
An impressive park. With impressive grounds. An impressive statue. An impressive bell tower that chimes multiple times per hour. An impressive view of the Nation's Capital. And it is directly adjacent to the many--too many--impressive men and women that have died in service to our country.
Bathrooms and water fountains available. Great spots for a picnic.
The US Marine Corps War Memorial is an awe-inspiring tribute to courage and sacrifice. The monumental statue of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima captures the unwavering spirit of those who served. Standing beneath the sculpture, I felt a profound sense of respect and gratitude. The attention to detail in the monument is remarkable, and the surrounding grounds offer a serene space for contemplation. This iconic monument embodies the valor of the Marine Corps and serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom. A visit to the US Marine Corps War Memorial is a humbling and moving experience that honors the dedication of our servicemen and women.
