A nice site worth visiting if you appreciate history and happen to be in the area. I visited on a Monday and had the entire place to myself, so I can only assume there probably isn't a lot of local interest. The site runs off donations, but I couldn't leave anything since the donation box was locked. Regardless, a good spot to check out if you are passing through the area.
Didn't know this existed but glad I found it. Idyllic setting next to the San Saba River. There's some walking trails next to the river and the town has some really neat old homes. We rented a vrbo on the river and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Recommend!
Fun remains to visit of a Fort. It's cool to know that the fort was taken apart to put into buildings of people who live in the surrounding area.
A wonderful place to stop for a picnic. Quiet and clean. Historical markers are detailed and informative. It seems like a really great place to have an outdoor family gathering. There are also some nearby llamas that kids might be interested in viewing.
A nice little place to get out and stretch your legs and enjoy a picnic. What is left of the old fort is neat to walk around in and read about as they have a few little informational things to read and there is also I river that runs behind and a golf course right next to it.
This was my first stop on hitting up the old presidios and forts in this area. You could feel the history walking around the area. The river was flowing so the sound of the river in the back drop while standing by the outer wall - you could just imagine the life and difficulties they faced every day compared to how easy we have it now. If anyone is into this type of visual, I would recommend this place.
Know before you go: it's not the original construction. The original presidio was destroyed long ago; many of the stones were pilfered and used for construction elsewhere. It's still an awesome place, and the restoration is really cool. They used original stones from the site, and 18th century plans. Definitely worth the trip from Austin.
Enough left to get a good idea of what it was. Another piece of Texas history. Nice setting.
