Beautiful grounds to walk and explore. Didn't buy tickets to go in, but just seeing the courtyard and walking the perimeter was nice. Dog friendly outside the museum. Absolutely beautiful views in every direction. Wished I was able to see it all lit up for the night of lights but the weather wasn't in our favor so we skipped seeing it in the evening. Will definitely be back to see it!
We accessed the museum from the Old Town Trolley. We enjoyed many of the stained glass pieces and photographs in the museum. The docents were friendly and helpful. The grounds were beautifully landscaped.
This place is magical. It takes you back in time. Shows you wooden objects and various other things. Glassware and statuesque photos of time when it was in the early stages of a state. Recommend if you are in the area. Only a few hours to go through. Unless you read everything then will take longer. Currently even available events of Art Deco.
The museum was much larger than expected and held a nice variety of historical, beautiful, and fascinating displays. We especially loved the glass and crystal rooms, the top floor bicycle displays, and the view of the massive pool area. This was a very luxurious retreat in its day. The building itself is fun to meander through and notice the architecture. All of the guides are very helpful, too.
The Lightner Museum, nestled in historic St. Augustine, is a treasure trove of art, history, and opulence. Housed in the former Hotel Alcazar, the museum is a testament to Gilded Age extravagance.

St. Augustine's Gem: The Lightner Museum is an essential stop for history buffs, art enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a taste of the grandeur of the Gilded Age in the heart of historic St. Augustine.
This place has some interesting history and a unique collection. The layout is a bit wonky but a volunteer near the entrance gave us a great historical overview and a recommended path to follow. It proved very helpful and we enjoyed navigating our way through the exhibits. All told, we spent about 90 minutes onsite stopping to further inspect items that caught our eye and zipping past others. .
Beautiful place, the building alone is worth checking out, but they had so many unique items. If you can, reserve a table at the Cafe. Delicious food, and a wonderful experience.
Outstanding !
What we saw:
“The Lightner Museum’s 75th Anniversary culminates with a major exhibition titled, The Triumph of Nature: Art Nouveau from the Chrysler Museum of Art. Contemporary with America’s Gilded Age, Art Nouveau was an exuberant, radical style that blithely trampled many of the Victorian era’s traditions of art and design. Celebrating beauty and nature while embracing new technologies and international influences, Art Nouveau exploded age-old orthodoxies with its fanciful approach to furniture, graphic arts, jewelry, architecture and more.
The exhibition is organized by the Chrysler Museum of Art and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.”
Wife Mary and I throughly enjoyed and were entertained well beyond the reasonable admission price.
The permanent collection only added to the experience and amazement.
Our next visit we will lunch in the pool
at Café Alcazar … Note no bathing costume required.
Thank you Lightner.
