Fort Pitt Museum - History museum in Pittsburgh - Point State Park, 601 Commonwealth Pl, USA

We just studied this area and these PA forts with the kids. It was a great experience for them to actually see some of the relics and actual place they have been reading about.Lots of terrific National and PA history. Staff were friendly. And for you veterans there is a little discount for entry.

Very informative museum detailing the history of Pittsburg and the surrounding area. Lots of history on Fort Pitt and the many battles that were fought for control of the region. There is a neat scale model of Fort Pitt itself in the lobby where you can pick up a telephone and hear a recording detailing life at the fort. It was a free day when I was there, but I think it usually costs $10-$15 per person.

We almost didn't go in but afterwards we were very happy we did! The biggest effect on our visit was our docent, Mrs. Hutchinson! She was fantastic! We learned so much from her, we were entertained and again we were very happy we went in. The exhibit is very well put together. From the great displays to the built environment, it is very informative.

A great historical spot for Colonial Revolutionary War, French and Indian War, and the War of 1812 military enthusiasts. Note the 13 star colonial colors flying.

This was the first time my husband and I visited this museum, and it turned out better than we expected. It took about 3 hours for us to get through the entire museum reading every sign (I'm a slow reader; my husband got through it all like 20 min before me.) The exhibits are well put together in a way that tells the story of the land on Pointe Park and the numerous conflicts between the French, the British, the natives, and the British American Colonists. We were unsure which way to go first on the second level and ended up doing the special exhibit first then started the main exhibit in the middle, following it to the end then ended up doing the rest backwards by mistake. I highly recommend starting with the video on your left when you come up the stairs, which is the start of the main exhibit, then follow it to the end. Then, after that, head over to the special exhibit on the right. Everything made way more sense going from the beginning of the timeline to the end than it did with us accidentally starting in the middle and working backward. While this museum had a few kids hands-on exhibits pieces throughout, I feel like this exhibit is better for teens and adults than for young children as it's mostly reading the signs accompanying visuals such as maps, photos, and artifacts on display and seems like it would likely bore most younger kids. Also, of note, it does not say this on their website, but this museum is part of the SNAP Museums for Us program, so if you have a SNAP or Access card, you can get up for 4 people in for just $1/person here if you show your card. There is no parking here, but you can park for free on the city streets metered parking spots on Sundays.

From Fort Duquesne to Fort Pitt, this area is full of history. After the Seven year’s war and Declaration of Independence, British and French were continuing my roaming around this land. Pittsburgh is a strategic location. There are great amount of information you can learn in this small museum. I do enjoy reading every single paragraph on the wall. There are several huge windows through which you can glance at the Duquesne Incline and Mt. Washington, giving you a time to take a break during your visit.

Nice museum with a lot of history inside. It's bigger than it looks from outside. 2 story. Had a few interactive displays and a few historical videos. Small gift shop.

Great museum detailing local history and the importance of what would become Pittsburgh in three major colonial conflicts. Beautiful grounds, well maintained facility, great museum shop, and very friendly, helpful staff. It took two adults doing a fairly intensive reading of all exhibits a little over 1.5 hours. Admission is free with tickets to the H. John Heinz History Center. You cannot buy tickets only for the Fort Pitt Museum online. If you mistakenly purchase tickets for the Heinz History Center, the staff is more than happy to refund you the difference in price.
