It is a very good place to take some cool photos! I highly recommend, if you are or passing by you should go and see!
Very interesting place. I wish they were open through the regular business hours. Although the view around is beautiful any time of the day the interior looks pretty abandoned. Their Rodman style colubiads look gorgeous. It would be great if they both had gun carriages. If you get accidentally inside the fort be aware of raccoon feces dropped all over the floor of every level and stair cases.
We’re here while it’s foggy and rainy. The place is surreal. It’s too beautiful.
This is the main building in historic Fort Wadsworth, the fortress that once guarded New York against external attacks. The building is off-limits to the public when we visited so all we could do was take pictures and read the information boards set up by the National Park Service, which highlight the history and significance of the place. Pay attention to the somewhat obscure lighthouse that caps the building.
From here, follow the walk path to another historic place called Fort Tompkins, which sits atop an adjacent hill.
This is a hidden gem; if you've never been find time to go! Most people that visit are stunned to learn that such an impressive structure exists in Staten Island. Also, most New Yorkers are unaware of this piece of local history. Bear in mind: the fortress is not always open so call ahead to find out how you can get access to the fort. Call the Fort Wadsworth Visitor Center; part of Gateway National Recreation Area.
Opposite of Manhattan, this fort is easily accable by ferry and bike.
I have been coming here since I was 17. Worth the visit. So many great places for pictures.
Enjoyed a little history walk on a Sunday morning with a ranger.
