Thirunakkara Ground - Picnic ground in Kottayam - Kottayam, India

Thirunakkara is historically significant spot in Kottayam. Currently, this is default parking space for Kottayam, during festivals (utsavams), there would be stalls and rides set up here. The architecture of the place is wonderful. The place is covered with trees, which adds beauty. You can sit there and relax too. You have a gate which is by a Christian name, the other gate which is by a Muslim name. The central stage is by a Hindu name. So, it talks about secularism. Thirunakkara, the term wise used to have in an old sayings - vanji ippozhum thirunakkara thanne --> meaning, nothing has progressed. Earlier days, thirunakkara held slave trade as per historians. The place is located close to the private bus stand.

It's a large gound, you can park you vehicles on that ground while you visit the temple. It's a good atmosphere to walk through that ground.

Thirunakkara Maidaanam..! In the early 80s, it was more beautiful than now, full of different kinds of plants, flowers, etc. like a public park. During my childhood days, my father used to take all of us there with family during weekends. We're getting privilege there because my father was an employee of Kottayam Municipality. I heard when Late P. T Chacko was the municipal chairman, that he had a special interest in taking care of this ground; he used to monitor the same too. It consists of two architecturally beautiful entrance arches named Maliakal M. C Mathew memorial & T. M Hassan Rawther memorial; and one stage for public programs named Mannam Shathabhisheka Smaraka Mandapam. Symbol of real secular Kottayam. Great.! Ample parking is one of the main attractions, and it is convenient for the public, they can park their vehicles with a minimum parking fee; provided by Kottayam Municipality. People spend their free time sitting & chatting without any disturbances of the city hassles. Very nice ambience, but not so hygienic. Taking kids there nowadays is not recommendable, especially in the late evening.

Nice place to park cars. Only place in the middle of the town to have some rest under the trees.
