The temple is incarnated by the hymns of Thevaram and is classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. This temple is an ancient temple .This temple is an ancient temple complex with three different Shiva Shrines. The Brahmapureeswarar shrine is housed in the lower level belonging to later chola period . The first level houses Periya Nayakar with Periyanayaki on Thoni, hence the name Thoniappar. Sattainathar/Vaduganathar is also housed here.
The main temple of Thoniappar is on first floor with no dieties on the ground floor this type of temple is called "Maadakovil" as mentioned by Thirunavukarasar in Devaram Hymns
Sattanathar (Abhathottarana Murthy) a form of Shiva present at Griva Koshta of the temple . Sattanathar subdued the Ego of Trivikrama / Vamana and wore it as his attire and held his Spine as his Danda.
Brahmma Pureeswarar is called as Thirukazhumalamudaiyar, Thoniappar as Thiruthonipuramudaiyar, Ammai as Periya Nachiyar, Thiru Gnanasambandar Peruman as Aludaya Pillaiyar
The temple was built during early Chozhas / Pallava Period. The temple has a lot of inscriptions which include Kulothunga Chozha -III (ARE 124 of 1896; SII, V, no. 989) and Rajadhiraja-II. The temple was further expanded during Latter Chozhas Kulothunga-I, II, III and Vikrama Chozha. The inscriptions mainly speak about donation of Lands, cattle for burning perpetual lamps, celebrations and poojas. As per the inscriptions Lord Shiva was called as Tirut-Tonipuram Udaiya Nayanar
Powerful & Divineful Shiva Temple (Sattanathar), located in Sirkazhi. One of the ancient temples of Shiva.
Renovation work is under process during my visit (Jan 27, 2023). Kumbabhisehgam will in the month of May 2023.
Very Big Shiva & Parvathy (10 feet Ht) in second level (appx 50 steps to reach 2nd level) . It is very amazing & eye catching. 3rd level (Sattanathar/Bairavar inside Shutter Window--appx 20 steps available). It is only one temple with 3 Gods in one place.

The Bhramapureeswarar shrine is housed in the lower level. Brahmapureeswarar is accompanied by Ambal Sthira sundari/Thiripurasundari or Thirunilainayaki in Tamil. The second-level houses Periyanakar with Periyanayaki on a Thoni, hence the name Thoniappar. Sattainathar/Vatukanathar is also housed here. There are 22 water bodies associated with this shrine. Three different forms of Shiva are worshipped here, the Shivalingam (Bhrammapureeswarar), a colossal image of Uma Maheswarar (Toniappar) at the medium level, and Bhairavar (Sattanathar) at the upper level. The temple is associated with the legend of child Sambandar who is believed to have been fed by Parvathi on the banks of the temple tank. The child later went on to compose Tevaram, a Saiva canonic literature on Shiva and became one of the most revered Saiva poets in South India.
(Above content copied from Wikipedia to get real essence of the Temple).
Thanks.
Pretty old temple located in the center of the town. Old times charm and majestic looks still remains. Must visit. They charge 5 rs to enter the small temple over few decks of the main temple. Quite a different one and peaceful. Temple pond is full of fish and very large. Visit in the evening to enjoy the divine experience.
The place where Thirugnanasambandhar started his divine journey. The place where he got gnanapaal from Ambal. Three tiered temple. A must visit for all shiva devotees. 71 songs have been sung on this temple alone. Breathtaking sculptures and experience.
Ancient temple under massive renovation. Only temple with three Rupas of Shiva in three floors.... As Sattanathar in linga Rupa in the ground floor, as Dhoniappar (Somaskandar) in the first floor, and finally as Sattanathar in Kaala Bhairava form in the second floor. We can see him through a window on the stairs
Sattainathar temple, ( called as Brahmapureeswarar and Thoniappar temple) in sirkali, a padalpetra temple, with three shiva temple in three stories, in ground level Bhramapureeswarar, The second level houses Periyanakar with Periyanayaki in doni, and the top sattainathar( as bhairavar) the temple is associated with the child Nayanmar Sambandhar, Mother Parvathi has fed milk to the child on the bank
Of the temple tank. During pralayam whole earth was submerged with water this place was found safe so lord shiva with Brahma Vishnu and with their concerts travelled here with 64 arts, so lord shiva is called as thoniappar, the temple complex has seperate shrines for Goddess Parvathi and Sambandhar, the temple complex has a seperate shrine for Astha Bhiravas, no where found in Tamil Nadu, Pooja's are done on Friday and on astamis during evening. Sirkali is 44 kms from Karikal, 24 kms from Chidambaram, 260 kms from Chennai and 23 kms from Mayiladuthurai.
A must visit place for Shiva devotees. Thirugnasambandar, birthplace, also known as Piramapuram. Shiva is seated in three tiers, first tier as Brahmapureeswarar(Brahma), second as Uma Maheswarar/Thoniyappar(Shiva) and as Sattainathar(Vishnu) in the third storey. It is known for its stepped level architecture called Maadakoil. The Uma Maheswarar alias Thoniyappar statue is so beautiful and dynamic, almost 10ft high, in sitting position along with Uma alias Parvathy.
They offer thailakaappu for this moorthi. As sang by Thirugnasambandar ,the beauty of this idol stoley heart.."enadu ullankavar kalvan".
This kshetram is famous for one of the naalvars, Thirugnasambandar as a 3 year old kid, was fed by Parvathy herself on the steps of the temple tank. Milk is offered as prasadam everyday symbolising the Gnanapaal, which he drank from Mother Parvathy.
My heart wants to visit this temple everytime, whenever I cross this temple enroute to Karaikal from Pondicherry.
Thiruchitrambalam. Devaram paadal "Thodudaiya seviyan, vidaiyeri en...." Petra sthalam.
Don't miss it...
