Smaranika Tram Museum - Museum in Kolkata - Kolkata, India

It was my first experience of stepping on such a historical tram. You get a lot of information about trams there and on the other they have a comfy and simple kind of cafe inside and the man handling inside that tram is super sweet and mannered. Must visit.

Very Small Place, but a very beautiful one. Revolution of trams, Devices and Mechanisms used for Trams and other various information, Photos, Instruments etc. are exhibited in a 2 Coach Tram. A Small Cafe is also there inside. Nearest metro is Esplanade Metro. Entry fee is Rs20 only.

Great place to have some quality time with friends and family. They have a very pocket friendly pricing menu. And an old museum as well. It is air conditioned as well. Definitely a must visit place

I love everything about trams since childhood so obviously wanted to visit this place for a long time. Even though, due to funding constraints the maintenance of this place is not up to the mark.. but I loved the place.. since it had so much history related to the evolution of trams. The owner of the cafe told us so much history about trams.. me along with my niece and family enjoyed listening to those stories. Unfortunately trams are been decommissioned and may become obsolete at some point, but just hope that the heritage of this museum stays in Kolkata. Encourage everyone to raise funds and help this museum survive.

"Smaranika"- Kolkata Tram Museum In the midst of the Esplanade Tram Depot, the busy tram lines are converged in a triangular garden where CTC-142 stands forever. It is now a museum and cafeteria, where one can enjoy a cup of tea in the midst of history of Kolkata. The Smaranika tramcar is officially designated CTC-142, was built in 1938. It was renovated and modified to accommodate a cafeteria in the 1st class compartment, and a tram museum in the back compartment, second class compartment. Smaranika tramcar displays the age old and the modern equipment and gadgets used by the Calcutta Tramways Corporation over the years. Among them are the Coin Exchanger with Punch and Ticket Pockets that was used in the 1950s by conductor for giving change of correct denominations to passengers. There are also a large number of tram models such as the Byomkesh Bakshi Tram Car. A double-bogie wooden tram car #567 of the year 1931 was specially modified at CTC Nonapukur Workshop in the year 2013 for shooting of the Hindi film 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi' directed by renowned film director Dibakar Banerjee. There are some more trams nearby which are supposed to be part of museum's exhibits but are in very poor condition. Some are being used as living quarters!

Spending time with that nostalgic memories is a pure bliss. Entry fee is 20/- for 45mins. Enjoy your time with tea or coffee from the cafeteria on board.
