Break on Through Should you ever decide to pay a visit, or homage, to these ruins of a glorious time in the past, it is easy to locate on Mathura Road, right opposite the grand remains of Purana Qila. You are, however, met with a huge forbidding lock on the iron-gate and a taciturn guard - rendered surlier by your unexpected intrusion. With a deep scowl and menacing tone, he tells you that the monument is shut down for renovation and tourists are not allowed to enter for fear of it collapsing altogether. Crestfallen, you gather all you powers of persuasion while the guard at the gate prepares to patronise. The guard at the gate gives in begrudgingly only when you ask for a copy of the order from the authorities. Chastised, he grants you five minutes.

One of the beautiful and massive gates of the sixth city of Delhi, the Sher Shah gate located to the south of Khairu'l-Manazil-Masjid is said to be an entrance to the large city of Delhi that Sher Shah built in front of his fortress of Purana Qila. The gate, mostly built with red sandstone but with use of local grey, quartzite in its upper storey, is thus called the Lal Darwaza (Red Gate).

One of the historical wonders in India. Amazing views. No ticket or fee required. Highly recommended for a visit.

I saw it from the bus and thought I'll explore the place. But turned out that it's all closed and only the little old mosque part is open to see. It's free ofc.

Sher Shah Suri gate is a splendid gate developed by Mughal ruler. It is situated in Mathura road of Delhi, at the opposite side of outstanding leftovers of Purana Qila. The gate is named according to its founder's name, i.e. Sher Shah Suri, who was the king of Mughal kingdom. He took authority over the Mughal kingdom in the year 1540. He created this gate after conquering the supreme force of king Humayun. Sher Shah Suri gate is supposed to highlight the southern verge of the empire of Sher Shah Suri. In any circumstance, the plan of the gate and the invigorated wall constructed with it describe that it was the southern entrance of particular zone. The planning of the gate along with the existing invigorated wall mention the boundary of his city.
