A wonderful ancient padal petra sthalam. Amazing to know that so many features and legends associated with this temple.
A temple associated with Paranjyothi the army commander who later on became to Siruthondu nayanar, whom god tested with the pillaikari episode.
A temple they say where the pillayar worship started first in south India.
This temple is at Tiruchengattangudi, a village near Nannilam Rly. station (about 10 km). It has a very popular historical background. Paranjyothi, the army commander of pallava kings of Kanchipuram, won the battle of Vathapi (present day Badami, Karnataka) against chalukya king Pulikesi II. He brought an idol of Ganesha from the Fort there and constructed a temple for Vathapi Ganapathy. Later many Chola kings developed a big Shiva temple around. the lord is known as Utradipatheeswar and goddess is known as Vandarkuzhali.
Paranjyothi became a pious person and dedicates his life in the service of lord Shiva. To test his devotion, Shiva appears as a fakir and was invited by paranjyothi for Lunch. Shiva puts a condition that he will have meat of a boy (Pillai curry), of only son of the parents, prepared by his own mother. Paranjyothi accepts the condition and offers his own son meat prepared by his wife, as offering to Shiva. Before starting with his lunch, Shiva calls the name of the boy. The meat ball on the plate disappears and the boy comes back alive. Shiva blesses them and disappears.
This story is enacted every year on Chitra Bharani, as Amudhu Padaiyal ( feast). About 25-30 thousands come here on that day. The Pillai curry is now made of mixture of rice, moong, elachi, lavang, cocunut powder, etc.
This is given as Prasada. Those who wish to have children take this Pillai curry and vow to return to the temple after their child is born.
On 04-05-2019, this festival was celebrated here.

Thiruchengattangudi Uthrapatheeswarar temple is located in the Thirumarugal, Thirukannangudi, Thirupugalur road, which branches off from Karaikal Kumbakonam highway at Thirumarugal and joins back at Thirupugalur.
Thiruchengattangudi is the birth place of Siruthondanayanar and known for the way Shiva tested him asking for pillai curry. For People with knowledge of South Indian history and who have read the Sivagamiyin sabatham novel of Kalki will know him better as Paranjothi. Paranjothi who lead the pallava army against Chalukyas was instrumental in capturing the chalukya capital Vatapi. The Vatapi Ganesha idol he brought after winning that war is located in the inner prakaram of the temple.
The huge temple complex houses several small shrines and a raja gopura.
