Sakri Gumti, Delhi - Historical landmark in New Delhi - South, India

On the road leading to Hauz Khas Village, there is yet another lovely tomb. Choti Gumti and Barah Khamba Tomb are present in its vicinity. On the eastern side, it is joined by a crumbling wall. As a result, it might have been a gate to an enclosure. It is excellent to see that the ASI has taken great care to conserve and maintain it. It is located on the major thoroughfare that runs through Hauz Khas Village. The nearby Choti Gumti is another protected monument. In direct sunshine, the monument looks stunning. For this mausoleum from the Lodhi era, not much information is accessible. Because of its diminutive size, one can assume that it was constructed for a woman or a lower-ranking aristocrat. ~ Entry is free. ~ Timings : 9 am - 6 pm. ~ Nearest metro station is Green Park. ~ No washroom.

Along with 'Chhoti Gumti' ('small tomb'), Sakri Gumti forms a pair of very similar small tombs on the edge of Green Park. The two tombs are separated by a street, but otherwise are very close to each other, and both date back to the Lodhi era, late 15th century - early 16th century. The Sakri Gumti is so named because it is disproportionately tall and narrow: it looks all scrunched up. It's not known whose tomb this is, but it's fairly well-maintained, within its own small patch of garden. No entry fee is charged, and since the garden gate is left open, locals use it like a park, to relax and chat. (Note that the signs put up here and at Chhoti Gumti have unfortunately been wrongly placed, switched around. The sign for Chhoti Gumti stands in the Sakri Gumti enclosure, and vice-versa).

One of the most famous places to visit in Delhi, it is a complex with quite a few structure the world made of bricks having a height of 72.5 meters. Another notable structure in the complex is the Iron Pillar which is famous for the rust resistant material used during its construction. Definitely worth a visit for a couple of hours.We were impressed by this beautiful five floor tower, floors being separated by balconies. We saw that the first three floors were in red sandstone and the last two floors were also decorated with white marble. There were decorations on the tower, which are made of geometric patterns and inscriptions

The 'Sakri domed building' as the name Sakri Gumti implies, refers to the low height and relatively small area of 8 square meters that the structure occupies. The dome and the battlemented parapet around it appear large in proportion to the low walls. The remnants of a grave in it tell us that this was a tomb but it is not known Who is buried here as there is no historical record of it. The style and ornamentation of the building, such as the painted medallion on the ceiling of the dome, suggest that it belongs to the Lodi period.

Hardly any information available for this Lodhi era mausoleum. It's small structure makes one believe perhaps it was built for a lady or for a smaller ranked nobleman. More like a big dollhouse than a proper mausoleum, it still looks quaint & a bit romantic. Entrance if free and can be viewed beary easily by persons with reduced mobility.

The name of this Lodi period structure literally means 'narrow domed building' which is very appropriate, given that the walls are tall in proportion to their width.

Sakri Gumti Hauz Khas is a narrow domed building which was possibly a gateway to some area. It has a small plan, occupying a mere 4.6 square meters on the ground. There is a broken wall attached to it on the eastern side. So, it might have been a gateway to some enclosure. It dates to the Lodi period.
