Raja Mahal, a testament to the architectural brilliance and regal lifestyle of the Bundela rulers. Built in the early 16th century, this palace, once the residence of the Orchha kings, has now become an iconic landmark, drawing visitors from across the globe to experience its rich historical tapestry. The Raja Mahal's exterior, though simple and unassuming, belies the grandeur that awaits within. As you enter the palace, you are transported into a bygone era, where the echoes of royalty still linger in the air. The palace's layout, divided into two wings, reflects the distinct roles of public and private life in the royal household. The outer wing, with its spacious audience halls and courtyards, was the center of political and social gatherings, while the inner wing housed the private chambers of the royal family. The walls and ceilings of the Raja Mahal are adorned with exquisite murals, depicting scenes from mythology, history, and everyday life. These vibrant paintings, though faded with time, offer a glimpse into the cultural ethos and artistic sensibilities of the Bundela rulers. The murals, a blend of Hindu and Islamic influences, showcase the harmonious coexistence of diverse traditions that prevailed during this era.

Built by Maharaja Madhukar Shah in 16th century. I visited in July 2023. The entry for the fort complex was for Rs50 each that covers fort complex, Chaturbhuj Temple, Laxmi Narayan temple and royal Cenotaphs. If you're moving for the visit to Royal Cenotaphs or Laxmi Narayan Temple, you better first buy tickets from fort ticket counter as these monuments are at much distance from ticket counter. So to save your time, better buy tickets before moving to these monuments. There's a light and sound show which describes the history of Bir Singh Deo dynasty, how Chaturbhuj Temple was came into existence, how Rani Mahal turned to Ramraja temple and much more. The timings are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all days of the week. The entry fee is INR 10 for Indians and INR 250 for foreigners. The charges for the usage of a camera is INR 25 and a video camera is INR 200. Timings for light and sound show are Summer season: English: Mar-Oct: 07:30 PM to 08.30 PM. Hindi: Mar-Oct: 08.45 PM to 09:45 PM. Winter season: English: Nov-Feb 06.30 PM to 07:30 PM. Hindi: Nov-Feb 07:45 PM to 08:45 PM. If you're a history buff and seek more than just visiting its grandieur architecture, you must go for light and sound show. Try to reach the spot little earlier and get your tickets without being in a queue.

Amazing...huge fort, present on an island in the betwa river....it shows the architectural greatness of Bundela Kings.. Fort complex is divided into 3 parts.. Deewan e aam..the outer court of king...it has marvelous paintings on the ceiling... which depicts the mirror image of carpets used that time.. Then inner courtyard, which is for king's court and ministers.. Residential area for kings and queens...it has some beautiful paintings in rooms and jharokha, which has a natural cooling system. I would suggest that, many videos are available on you tube which shows the details of fort...you can see them, to better understand the great construction.. It usually takes 2- 3 hours to completely savour the beauty of this marvel...take time and enjoy the details!!!

The orcha fort is situated crossing the bridge. Inside you need to buy a ticket costing rs 50 for Indians which is applicable for all the historical places situated nearby. The fort is well maintained and is still under construction and development. Raja Mahal is a beautiful ancient Mahal which has beautiful paintings carved on the walls. The hand painted walls are the beauty of the palace.

MUST SEE! A huge Mahal with marvelous articheture n detailed art on walls n some celings. You will be stunned with the views from each side of the mahal n within. There is different detailing and designing on each floor of the mahal. Will take at least 2hrs if you will walk around up n down the mahal. It's all worth it! There is still some ceiling art left in the mahal which depicts our mythology. Each floor is designed differently if you observe the entrances n domes We went on a Thursday so was hardly any crowd.

A little introduction about Raja mahal: Raja Mahal is situated along the banks of river Betwa in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh. Ruins of former palace are present with 16th-century origins, fading murals & ornate stonework. Good place to visit if you are fond of historical monuments. The view from the top is beautiful and worth the effort. Guides are available that explain each detail and cars can be taken inside up to the entry of the fort. Jehangir Mahal is also situated just nearby so you can visit 2 monuments in one go. Best time to visit : 10am to 4pm and try to take your own vehicle

Raj Mahal The Palace in Orchha is a perfect example of luxury and elegance with all modern facilities and yet maintains the royal opulence. Overlooking the Betwa River, it is the ideal place to enjoy the very heart of India. With its skilled and experienced staff, personalized service and luxury accommodation in a tranquil environment, it is a natural choice for leisure and business guests alike. Orchha (or Urchha) is a town in Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh state, India. The town was established by rajput ruler Rudra Pratap Singh some time after 1501, as the seat of an eponymous former princely state of covering parts of central & north India, in the Bundelkhand region. Orchha lies on the Betwa River, 80 km from Tikamgarh & 15 km from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh.

Must visit this place when one goes to Orchha. Beautiful palace... really a time machine that transports you to a different era! One can walk around and imagine the grand place this once was. What an architectural marvel. Only one ticket is required to see all the sites and it only costs 10 rs for indian citizens! Only negative thought I had was that it could be maintained better. There was garbage lying around and people had scratched their names into these ancient walls. That was very sad. If we are proud of our country, we should be proud of our heritage too! The archeological Dept should really spend some money to restore the beautiful paintings on the ceilings and make sure they don't deteriorate further. It would also be great to have one of the rooms refurbished to show what it might have looked like when the palace was functioning. I would highly recommend going here... especially in the monsoon
