Patal Bari - Historical landmark in Chandannagar - Hooghly, India

One of the Historical Place at Chandannagar, West Bengal, India.. Great Rabindranath Tagore and Pandit Iswar Chandra Bidyasagar.. visited this House... this house is more than 150 years old..

This place has its mention in Rabindranath Thakur's novels!! The four storied house has it's two floors below the water level of the river, once used by the Freedom fighters as their hideout!

A yellow coloured heritage building situated at the end point of Chandannagar Strand road on the banks of river Bhagirathi. Unfortunately, people are not allowed here to enter this house. You have to visit this place and see from outside and take some photos, that's it. You can take a local auto to come here from railway station.

Don't bother to keep this in your itinerary. This is a private property, not a museum. No one mentioned this. So you can only see the house from outside and there is nothing to see

Famous poet late Rabindra nath Tagore used to come this house Chandannagar and write poems and stories in this place.

The place is good, Rabindranath thakur had stayed here. But one can't just go inside the house rn. Not everyone is allowed there. You'll need permission to go in.

This building is another beautiful example of the advancement in the knowledge of architecture and the aesthetic sense of the people of those earlier days... Its lower floor is submerged during monsoon when the level of the river rises... Rabindranath Tagore frequently visited this place and appreciated a lot about the building... He felt that the place influenced him to a large extent and broadened his intellectual capabilities... He mentioned Patal-bari in many of his famous novels... The famous social reformer Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar also stayed in the building... Now it's a private property.. so entry is prohibited.
