I recently visited Uparkot in Junagadh after its renovation, and the transformation is truly remarkable. The upgraded features give it a fresh and captivating appearance, showcasing a marvelous job in restoration. The cleanliness adds to the charm, making it a must-visit place. Set aside at least 3 hours to explore the fort and immerse yourself in its beautiful history. Kudos to the government for the commendable effort in preserving and renovating this historical gem.
Navghan Kuvo is a stepwell in the Uparkot Fort complex. Built during the Chudasama dynasty and named for the Chudasama king, Navaghana. It's believed to have been built in the 11th century and some scholars believe Navghan Kuvo to be the oldest stepwell built. At the top of the stepwell, is the forecourt from which you can look down into the well and it does not look good. There water at the bottom of the well. The water looks really dirty and filled with rubbish. It's possible to walk further down into the well. I think I got about 30 metres down before the smell was so bad, I just walked back up. The forecourt also has some interesting square niches cut into the rocks which the pigeons like to use as coops. Actually this creates another problem as there's pigeon droppings everywhere just to add to the general rubbish in the well, stairs and in the general area. The place is not well maintained, but then it's free and has a lot of history. I'd give it an extra star if it wasn't so dirty.
Navghan Kuvo is named after the Chudasama king Ra Navaghana. The forecourt to reach the well was probably built during his reign in 11th century. It is believed to have been completed by his son Khengara. The well is considered older than the forecourt. It is an oldest example of the stepwell according to some scholars. It is near the Uparkot Caves. The well might have been built in Kshatrapa period (2nd-4th century) or in Maitraka period (6th-7th century).
This is one of the oldest and deepest step well in India located in Junagadh, Gujarat. Good place for photography lovers. If you step down the well, you will notice that the temperature of the atmosphere has been decreased drastically. You will find good spots for photography. There are many keyholes in which you will be able to find the nests of the birds. Overall nice experience to visit this place.
This well was build by Ra Navghan, it is a must visit place if you go to Navghan Kuvo, also known as the Stepwell of Navghan, is a historical stepwell located in the city of Junagadh, in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Stepwells are unique structures commonly found in India, characterized by a series of steps leading down to a well, providing access to water. Navghan Kuvo is believed to have been built in the 11th century by a Chudasama ruler named Navghan I. It is known for its intricate and ornate architecture, featuring intricate carvings, sculptures, and inscriptions that reflect the craftsmanship of the time. The stepwell served both as a functional water source and as a place of cultural and architectural significance. It's an example of the rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess of the region during that period. Today, Navghan Kuvo stands as a historical and architectural marvel, attracting visitors interested in exploring India's rich cultural history. It's worth noting that while the stepwell has been recognized for its historical significance, it's always a good idea to check for any specific visiting guidelines or restrictions before planning a visit..
