Mirza Ali Jan Bawdi - Featured Reviews (167)
This baoli (water tank) built by Mirza Ali Jan, the Nawab of Narnaul during the reign of Emperor Akbar, is situated to the north-west of the town of Narnaul. The main structure of the building is in the shape of a huge arched gateway carrying the 'Takhat' with a rectangular pillared 'Chhatri' (Kiosk) on its top. The 'Chhatri' has a decorated flap, resting on the eight pillars made of grey stone into rows that open to all sides. Below it, there is a balcony with staircases. The Takhat stands on the main arched entrance of the baoli. On the south, the main arched opening is attached with the three-storied 'baoli' and further a well.
The heritage city of Haryana, Narnaul is home to many known and hidden architectural gems. Some of them look well maintained while some fall prey to ignorance and proper upkeep. Narnaul is also known for its water bodies, be it Kunds, talabs or stepwells.
Mirza Ali Jan (Takht) Baoli near Chhota Bara Talab is one such unique architectural marvel. Its massive and fascinating arched gateway makes it look like a palace and a throne (Takht), hence the name Takht Baoli. This stepwell is a must visit place if you happen to be in Narnaul.
Great experience
A Bawdi is more like a stepwell surrounded by rooms and resting place. In modern terms its like a hotel with swimming pool in it (I may be wrong here but this is the closest modern analogy i could think of).
Nostly Bawdi are multi story building with 2 below the ground level. Each floor is having long corridors on 3 sides and stairs on one side. There is an inscription on the top floor which says that it was built by some Mirza Ali Jaan. Some believes that the present building was built upon the remains of a much older building.
