Mahatma Gandhi Memorial - Museum in Podanur - Coimbatore, India

The city of Coimbatore shares a special bond with Mahatma and has played a seminal role in nurturing the patriotic fervor in this region. Mahatma had visited the city thrice and left indelible footprints in this landscape. The simple tiled-roof house of Shri G D Naidu family at Podanur gained historical significance in 1934 when Mahatma stayed overnight in this house on the 6th & 7th of February which had been occupied by Sri.Avinashilingam Chettiar, the founder of the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya to run a small school for the Harijan students. Ideologically, this simple abode became an ideal space for the Mahatma to stay, who patronized Harijan welfare and emancipation. Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, Coimbatore located at Podanur is a space of historical significance, showcasing the life and message of Mahatma Gandhi and disseminating the principles of non-violence, peace and love for humanity through celebrations, events and activities. Visiting hours Monday to Saturday 09:00am to 06:00pm Sunday Holiday Entry is free for all visitors

Recently inaugurated on 2nd October 2022. The memorial has an exhibition, photo gallery, library and semi open conference space. This house was the house of GD Naidu and once hosted mahatma gandhi. In recent times this house was moved into a gandhiji memorial. The memorial is lit up in the night and looks good. Enough basic parking in the front. The roads in podanur are pathetic and one finds it difficult to reach the spot.

A must visit place! Completely restored for public visit. Very calm and wonderful space for imbibing Gandhi and his thoughts. This home hosted Mahatma who stayed here when visiting Coimbatore during one of his several trips to the city.

Nicely restored premises. The story of the place; both its association with the Mahatma, as well as its connection to stalwarts like GD Naidu brought out through information panels and a few replica objects. Definitely a must-visit in Coimbatore. Especially important to take young people there.

It is a beautifully maintained memorial for Mahatma Gandhi. It was originally the guest house of GD group of industries. Mahatma Gandhi stayed here for 2 days. There is a beautiful collection of photographs on display in the gallery section which depicts the life of Mahatma.

Very nice initiative taken by Kumaraguru and GD institutions to set up the Gandhi memorial. Definitely make time and visit the place with your friends and family.
