Office and residence of Lord Canning. Lord Canning was viceroy to India during 1856-62. He tried to make a river port on Matla river but it didn't work out because of large sediment generation on Matla river and frequent cyclone. The house is of European architecture, but it's now decaying due to not maintaing it and is maintained by West Bengal government.

Lord Canning House, once a historic and prestigious building, has sadly fallen into a state of disrepair. Its current condition is very poor, and visitors are unable to enter its interior. However, you can still capture its grandeur from the outside and appreciate its architectural significance through photography . This building, named after Lord Canning, the first Viceroy of India, holds historical importance, and its deterioration is a matter of concern. It stands as a reminder of the need for heritage preservation and restoration efforts to safeguard our cultural treasures. While you may not be able to explore its interior, Lord Canning House's exterior can still offer a glimpse into its past glory and the architectural marvel it once represented. It's a poignant sight that underscores the importance of preserving our heritage for future generations.

Very nice place. A historical place with the heritage building of Lord Canning. But it will be destroyed for non maintaining. It will be a great tourist spot in the bank of river Matla. Govt. must be take care of it because of earning money from tourism. So many tourist spot in Bengal but no care of any govt. So disgusting culture of Bengal.

In 1850, the then Governor General of India, Lord Canning, took up a plan to establish a river port in this region on the banks of the Matla river in the South 24 Parganas district. It was then that this village on the banks of Matla river was named Port Canning after Lord Canning. This 'Canning House' was built to serve as the office of Port Canning. Interestingly, in 1860, the railway from Kolkata to Canning was built to strengthen the connection of Kolkata with this port. But later due to the decrease in navigability of Matla river and various natural calamities, Lord Canning's plan failed and this house was abandoned along with it. The current condition of the house is very poor, several parts of the second floor have collapsed. An old gentleman lives in the front portion of the house who looks after the entire property. I heard from him that visitors are no longer allowed to enter the house. Although the house is under the protection of the West Bengal Heritage Commission, serious steps need to be taken to restore the house to preserve the heritage and history of the past.

An amazing structure of 18th Century .. Heritage Of Our Bengal .. But the building is becoming abandoned day by day .. There is a man who lives there , he said this building is going for redevelopment very soon but when it will happen nobody knows ... It desperately needs redevelopment because we should save our heritage and specially this kind of things which was built in 18th century . The building is standing there from 18th century and it witnessed so many things ... Govt should definitely think something about it very soon .. I visited there on 02.01.2022 .. Now i want to talk something about the road , please don't go blindly with Google map , whenever Google will guide you into a tiny road please do ask someone for better guidance .. i visited by bike and Google guided me in a Wrong way and it took me to a railway track and the road was straight but there was no road , there was only railway tracks ... So its better to ask some local person whenever it feels unsafe ..

It's a Old administrative House of British Era and Was Built by Lord Canning. Route - It's about 1km from Canning Railway Station. You will get Toto easily and all types of vehicles can be arrived here so that's not the main problem. But it needs attention, it need some improvement. It's a basically slum area everyone captured the nearby area illegally. You cant go there during rainy season. It's is a just khandhar nothing else.
