The main purpose of the dam is hydroelectricity with some irrigation in neighboring areas. Today the Koyna Hydroelectric Project is the largest completed hydroelectric power plant in India[2] having a total installed capacity of 1,960 MW. Due to its electricity generating potential, Koyna river is considered as the 'life line of Maharashtra'.[3] The spillway of the dam is located at the center. It has 6 radial gates. The dam plays a vital role of flood controlling in monsoon season. The catchment area dams the Koyna river and forms the Shivasagar Lake which is approximately 50 km (31 mi) in length. It is one of the largest civil engineering projects commissioned after Indian independence. The Koyna hydro-electric project is run by the Maharashtra State Electricity Board.[citation needed] The dam has withstood many earthquakes in the recent past, including the devastating 1967 Koynanagar earthquake, resulting in the dam developing some cracks. After the disaster grouting of the cracks was done. Also internal holes were drilled to relieve the hydrostatic pressures in the body of the dam. Indian scientific establishment has formulated an ambitious project to drill a deep borehole in the region and intensely study the earthquake activity. This would help in better understanding and possible forecast of earthquakes. The proposal is to drill up to 7 km and study the physical, geological and chemical processes and properties of the reservoir triggered earthquake zone in real time. It would be an international project to be led by Indian scientists.[4]

If you want to witness a mega project just go there and see how this was built. Preferably go there immediately after monsoon. Amazing place.

One of the most beautiful place. I had visited till now. The view looks amazing from the Top. One can visit this place any time but I suggest you to visit it during Winter season the view is beautiful and one can enjoy staying there in hotels and roam around different beautiful places. Amazing Experience. There is Gardern near the Dam where you can find every details of Dam construction work and everything related to Koyna Dam. One must visit that place with Family, friends or loved one. In Rainy season it's looking more beautiful but due to heavy rainfall you can't go near Dam, so winter season is best...

This is a place which appears to have lost it glory long time back. This may be understandable as the work on the dam is complete. The dam per se is good but one cannot get a close up view of the dam. The backwaters look beautiful. Beyond this nothing good can be said about the surrounding areas maintained by the Dam authorities. Nehru memorial garden is pathetic, poorly maintained and has few visitors. The shops and eating joints in the garden have closed down and there appears to be a substandard movie & digital display in the conference hall by a set of people who are totally disinterested. Whatever little of Koyna Nagar was visible showed signs of neglect and decay.

The beautiful clear lake and the thick mysterious forests make Koyna valley the most sought after trekking destination of Maharashtra for weekend getaways and nature enthusiasts. With numerous peaks lining its edges and India's largest hydroelectric dam at a stone's throw, this valley becomes an undeniable favorite for adventure lovers. and most important thing - keep away your small childrens from edge things

The construction of the Koyna dam started in the year 1956, and it was opened in 1964. The Tata group constructed a hydroelectric facility on the Koyna river after World War I (1914-18). The dam suffered a few cracks during the 1967 earthquake at Koyna Nagar. Many smaller earthquakes have also occurred around the dam
