The Kota Garh Museum, situated in the rambling palace complex on the banks of the Chambal in South-East Rajasthan is the most important tourist destination in Kota. The old city has three sets of concentric walls which have been built over time as the city has grown. The thickest and most recent set was built under the Dewan Zalim Singh in the early 19th century and forms some of the most impressive fortifications in India. The foundation of the fort can be traced back to 1264 and Kotah officially became a separate state from Bundi in 1624 under Rao Madho Singh, hence the name of the family trust which runs the Museum, Rao Madho Singh Museum Trust. The Trust was formed in 1970 at the initiative of M.K. Brijraj Singh under his father, Maharao Bhim Singh, with the object of setting up a museum to educate the public about the history of Kotah State and to preserve Kota's heritage for future generations. (When referring to the erstwhile state and the royal family, Kotah is spelled with an 'h', while modern Kota post-independence is spelt without an 'h'.) Pandit Madan Mohan Shastri, who had just retired as curator of the Rajasthan State Museum in Kota, was instrumental in helping M.K. Brijraj Singh set up the museum. They were aided by Thakur Jaswant Singh and 1960, the Kota Barrage was built across the river Chambal right next to the Palace complex and some of the buildings were flooded and got damaged as a result

Lovely place to see and witness different parts of work of arts based in this part of Rajasthan. Simply awesome and amazing experience to learn something beyond books. This place gives an aura of arts, artifact and photos of different things of around the world. The place is spacious to organize such a design based theme of arts.

Contains many historical objects, one of the best musuem you can find in kota, a section dedicated completely for bundi school of nineteenth-twentieth century paintings, another to weapons, and many sections for scuplture , here you can find sculpture and terracotta work ranging from 9th century AD to 19th century AD , it includes Jainism section, shaivism, mithun couples, also there is a map showing revolt of 1857 in kota, and there are many pre-historic aged stones, from simple stone tools to complex monoliths, i found the stone sculpture of mahavira ranging 12th - 13th century AD as an awe experience to observe, other than that there is one more important thing - the four pillars - which are standing outside inside a glass room , they are from baran district and dates back to being very old and they have a message engraved on them..all in all if you like to know history and you are in kota..Worth a visit.!

Very good museum, not many artefacts but it is peaceful and neat and clean place. Most of the artefacts here have been excavated from places near Kota like atru, baran, antah, chabra, etc. 20 Rs ticket for Indian adult and 5 Rs ticket for students.
