The Chola King Muchukunda helped Indra in defeating demon Valasuran. For the help, Indra promised to fulfil a wish of the king. The king asked for the murti of Somaskanda form of Shiva (Thyagaraja Swamy) which was worshipped by Bhagavan Vishnu himself. The murti rested on the chest of the reclining form of Bhagavan Vishnu. The murti used to move up and down to the breath of Bhagavan Vishnu.Bhagavan Vishnu had presented the murti to Indra, the king of devas. Indra was not ready to part with the murti and therefore decided to play tricks on King Muchukunda. He asked Vishwakarma, the divine architect of the universe, to make six more similar murtis of Somaskanda (Thyagaraja Swamy) .One by one Indra offered the murtis to the king. King Muchukunda was an ardent devotee of Shiva and easily recognized the duplicate murtis. King Muchukunda picked the original murti. Impressed by the devotion of the king, Indra gave him all seven murtis. The original image was installed in Thiruvarur , the capital of Muchukunda chola. The other six images were installed in Thirunallar, Nagapattinam, Tirukarayil, Tirukolili, Thirukkuvalai and Thirumaraikadu ( Vedharanyam). All the seven places are villages situated in the river Cauvery delta. All seven Thyagaraja images are said to dance when taken in procession (it is the bearers of the processional deity who actually dance). The temples with dance styles are regarded as Saptha Vidangam (seven dance moves).Here we will see the Nagapattinam Temple in detail . Here Lord Shiva deity is known as Kayarohana and his consort as Nilayadakshi. This is one of the place where the Lingam is made up of Ruby. Hence, the Lord is also called Sundara Vidangar. The shrine of Lord Thyagaraja is also present here. The eyes of mother Ambica is blue in colour as sea shows her deepness and mercy to us. She has her own shrine with a flag post - Kodi Moram. This temple is from 6th Century AD and was praised by many Legends. During the death in the nearby area the temples are generally being closed but here the Vastra of the Lord is placed on corpse. There is also a shrine of Mother Ashta Bhuja (eight hands) Kali in the temple. It is said that this temple was constructed by Lord Lakulisha - 28th and last incarnation of Lord Shiva who was born in Gujarat. The temple was praised by the Nayanmars Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar in their hymns. As per Hindu epics, Sage Pundarika was performing penance to Lord Shiva seeking for salvation. Granting his Darshan, Lord Shiva granted salvation with his body. The Lord embraced the body with that Sage. Hence, Lord is named as Kaya (body) Aarogana (embracing) Easwarar Lord Kayaroganeswarar. The rishi also requested for moksha for his descendants, and the body is brought to the temple gate even today, when someone from the sage 's family dies, then the lord's clothes and guirnal clothes are brought to adorn the body for blessing. As per the another legend attached with this sacred shrine is, the King of Serpents worshipped Lord Shiva and blessed with girl. But she was born with three breasts, thus King was highly upset. Then Lord Shiva give assurance that one breast will disappear once the king of the Surya dynasty visit here. And same happened when King Shalisuhan came here, after seeing this King of serpent had arranged marriage of his daughter with king Shalisuhan. After this, this region was popular as Nagai Karonam or Naggapattinam as the Naga King was worshipped here.

Kayarohans Swami Temple is located in Nagapattinam, Tamilnadu. This temple is existence since 6th century and praised by Appar,Sundarar,Sambandar in Thevam and also by Arunagirinathar in Thirupugal. This is the place where God gave Sundarar a horse, pearl necklace, Navamanis, silk, sandham, churikai etc. As the Lord gave his chariot to Sundar, the legend says that since that day, the chariot festival in this temple is held only for Sundaramurthy Swamy. This temple is one of the Saptha Vidangam and it is a Shakti Peeth. The Mother Ambica Neelayadakshi , graces as virgin. Lord Shiva sent Nandhi Deva to be her guard. Nandhi here is seen with his neck turned towards Lord with one eye on Ambica and another eye on the Lord Shiva. Those having vision problems pray to this Nandhi. In this temple all the Navagrahas are facing west - Lord Shiva. People pray from here for relief from grahadhosams. Fisherman Athipathar was awarded with salvation ana a place among 63 Nayanmars. This is one of the important temples which each Hindu should have Dharshan .

Here presiding deity Lord Shiva and his consort is Nilayathaakshi (blue eyed),she graces here as a virgin. lord Shiva ordered Nandi Deva to give protection to her, But Nandi devar wanted to see lord Shiva also.so Nandi turned his neck onto lord Shiva with one eye seeing Shiva and other eye focussing ambigai. Jeevasamadhi of Azhukkuni siddhar is there in North East corner of this temple. Sage pundarika attained kayam (body) aarogana ( embraced) so Lord Shiva is called as kayaaroganeeswarar. Adhipathar fisherman attained salvation in this place. Must visit temple in our lifetime

A Divine and Ancient Temple, situated in Nagapattinam. The priests here are humble and kind. There is a jeeva samadhi of Azukuni siddhar. The people there know it's a Sivan temple and could not identify if we ask where is kaya arogana Swami temple. The temple is surrounded by houses with narrow streets. If you are going by car you have to be careful . Must visit if you happen to be there @ Nagapattinam.

Needs maintenance but can't blame anyone but our pious Hindu brethren rejoicing in Kali Yugam. In the massive and intricate temple steeped in history and spirituality, thare was just another devotee. A temple is a living, breathing entity. When there are no devotees to adulate the Gods, this happens.
