KATRA MASJID - Historical landmark in Murshidabad, Sabjikatra - Murshidabad, India

One of the most beautiful and best-managed tourist places in the historical city, this mosque is a gem. It was built by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan and serves as the final resting place of the Nawab. A visit to Murshidabad is incomplete without exploring this historical site. The entrance fee is nominal, and there is ample parking available.

It was a marvelous experience for me. The historical landmark of Murshidabad which was built by Murshid Quli Khan is itself a place of wonder. The place is well maintained and history can be felt at every corner of this place.

Murshid Quli Khan on reaching old age, expressed his desire to construct his tomb adjacent to a mosque. He entrusted the responsibility for constructing the mosque to his trusted follower who was an architect, Murad Farash Khan Nizamat Kila (the Fortress of the Nawabs) also known as the Hazaarduari Palace (Palace of a Thousand Doors), the Moti Jhil (Pearl Lake), the Muradbagh Palace and the Khushbagh Cemetery. The Katra Masjid holy mosque for Muslims. The Katra Masjid is a former caravanserai, mosque and the tomb of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan. It was built between 1723 and 1724.[1] It is one of the largest caravanserais in the Indian subcontinent. It was built during the 18th century, when the early modern Bengal Subah was a major hub of trade in Eurasia. The Katra Masjid is located in the north eastern side of the city of Murshidabad, in the Indian state of West Bengal. The most striking feature of the structure are the two large corner towers having loopholes for musketry.

It is a good place to visit in weekend or as day trip from Kolkata. There is no ticket system to enter the mosque. The place is indeed beautiful and photogenic.
