This fort has an amazing history and it was wonderful to see. 100% recommended taking a guided tour: it enhances the experience multifold and you get a lot of local insight into it as well. There is an extra ticket (rs 25) in the fort itself for entry to the Buddhist caves. This is the only part of the entire fort that is preserved as it is by ASI. The rest of the fort is under multiple departments and jurisdictions, each funneling money into their own pockets and "renovating" the fort by absolutely destroying the natural beauty it holds. Would recommend visiting for the history, the caves, and the steepwell.
It's only 1 palace in Bikaner at visit. Overall good experience. Total time required to visit in around 1.5 Hr. Parking is also available in fort. The fort, itself, is amazingly beautiful and there is even an airplane in the basement. An excellent place to stop in Rajasthan. Give yourself a lot of time to thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the beauty and history of this Fort. I would definitely recommend this fort to those of you who love history
Junagarh fort is an impressive monument of rajasthan, with huge towers and battlements for defiance. It has some beautiful palaces within. Nice place to visit with family and friends
This is one of the ancient forts which makes it one of the historical places to visit in Junagarh. This fort is near about twenty-three hundred years old. The walls of the fort are as high as twenty meters in some parts of the fort. It is said that once upon a time there was a three hundred feet deep moat in the walls. This moat was once said to be a habitat of crocodiles. It was made to protect the fort. There are two major attractions in the fort. These are the two major attractions are Cairo and Neelam. These were made in Cairo and were brought by Turks in India. The steps, as well as the caves in the fort, are a must-see.
Uparkot Fort is built at the foothills of Girnar hill during reign of the Maurya Empire and continued to be used during Gupta period. The Uparkot is one of the most interesting of old forts. It was ruled by several Chudasamas of Vamansthali. There is a one interesting story about "Junagadh" word, a woodcutter one day managed to cut his way through the forest and found a place where stone walls and a gate existed, where nearby sat a holy man in contemplation. Woodcutter the name of the place and its history, he replied that its name was "Juna" -- old. Woodcutter returned and reported his discovery to the Chudasama ruler, who ordered the forest to be cleared away. But there was none who knew its history. So the place became known as "Junagadh". This historical monument having lots of mythical stories and incidents but it due to ignorance of Government bodies and ASI it's losing its beauty and importance of itself. Forts most structure has been ruined. Due to its slightly elevated location it provides a magnificent scenery view of the around it. There is entry fee except for vehicle entry ticket.

A fort and town was established at the foothills of Girnar hill during reign of the Maurya Empire and continued to be used during Gupta period, but it lost its importance when the capital of Saurashtra region was moved from Junagadh to Vallabhi by Maitraka. Chudasamas settled around Junagadh from 875 CE according to bards when they acquired Vamansthali (Vanthli) from Chavda ruler. A 10th-centuryChudasama king Graharipu (r. c.940-c.982) cleared the old citadel free from the jungle. From the evidence contained in the Hemchandra's Dvyashraya, it can be concluded that Graharipu laid the foundations of the citadel as it now exists. the legend is told about its rediscovery. Legend After several Chudasamas of Vamansthali had ruled, a woodcutter one day managed to cut his way through the forest and came to a place where stone walls and a gate existed. Nearby sat a holy man in contemplation, and on being asked by the woodcutter the name of the place and its history, he replied that its name was "Juna" -- old. The woodcutter returned by the way he had come to Vamansthali, and reported his discovery to the Chudasama ruler, who ordered the forest to be cleared away. This being done, the fort came into sight. But there was none who knew its history, or who could tell more than the holy man had told the woodcutter. So the place became known as "Junagadh" for want of a better title. If this story is to be believed, either Graharipu rediscovered an ancient stronghold or else after he had built the fort, it was abandoned and afterwards found again by a later ruler Navaghana who transferred Chudasama capital from Vamansthali to Junagadh.
