Chilka lake is beautiful. Serene, even. But, humans are nature's worst enemies. There were empty plastic bottles, food wrappers and all sorts of waste that doesn't belong in the water floating around. I shudder to think what will become of the water life if everybody thinks, 'it's just one small bottle'.
Then, our boat ride cost a lot. Which we don't mind. But the boat had broken, rotting planks of wood, was tied with some thin plastic rope. My foot went into one of the rotting planks and I had a fall resulting in an injured knee and a swollen palm due to the impact.
Adding to the agony, our boat man was a rude, greedy, arrogant, lying person. He stole a packet of our bird feed, then lied to us about the cost of a tender coconut because he wanted to pocket the rest of the money. Third, he demanded money because he 'showed us the dolphins'.
Best time for dolphin spotting is before 9am and by government boat as they are quite (use petrol motors). Private boats use diesel motors and are very noisy and also they charge you extra for the boat than the government boats. Government boats booking can be done at OTDC Satpada hotel reception.
Chances of spotting dolphins are slim but if ur lucky u will be able to see 4-5 of them. They take u to a place to see crabs and pearls ( nice scam) the pearls are most probably fake as they will open 5-6 of them and they turn out to be empty and then will try to do a sleight of hand and act horribly . Pls don't fall for it .
Also at the time of writing this the cost was 4500+ which is very expensive and they didn't have any plans below it.
800rs charges. Dolphin seeing is unpredictable. But it's a must experience to feel in World's one of the largest brackish water lake Chilika.
It is a good place to spot dolphins and we were lucky enough to spot many of them.
Try visiting this place post afternoon and there might be more chances of spotting them.
Make sure to keep quiet once you enter this zone.
Definitely u will see the dolphins here.....u have to go through the boats provided at the lake tower...the baots charge around 1500 for a 3 to 4 hrs...they will take to dolphins and 2 to 3 islands and mini kalijae temple also....this is the kind of place where u will witness natural dolphins roaming in the lake water .the dolphins will appear near the boat if u r lucky....but definitely u will see the dolphins when u go there...nice entertain ment
Must go place..we were lucky that we have seen DOLPHINS and enjoyed with SEGLES (bird).
Please take popcorn for SEGLES but don't take dolphin food as the shop keeper fools you by saying this..
Secondly make sure that you have enough drinking water along with wafours as it takes 04 hours for chillika lake, then to RED CRAB island, then one more beach and come so total time will take around 4 hours..
And before you reach please give food order to the restaurant also there is a policy which I have heard that "for chillika lake if you won't get the opportunity to see dolphins then they will return your money"..It's by government..
We enjoyed as we went with our family.
