Gundert Bungalow - Historical place in Thalassery - Kannur, India

An unexpected place. Very well kept, informative and was surprised to learn about Mr. Gundert and his contribution towards south Indian languages. A must visit place when in kannur/Thalassery.

Very nicely done-up place. Great amounts of history available through very organized and interesting consumption mediums. Must-do for history and culture aficionados. The house itself is fascinating.

Let me tell you first, there's a Rs. 50 entry fee here and it's absolutely worth paying for it especially if you are someone interested in Kerala history. There's a lot that you can see and learn about Kerala in those times and Gundert as well. There's audio visual instruments to supplement your experience. The Government of Kerala has made a great effort trying to establish something like this. The Bungalow and the museum is being run with the help from Tubingen University in Germany. There's his writing, the first dictionary in Malayalam is also on display here. You can put one letter into the slot and it'll show you all the words in the Gundert dictionary!. You can also see his Bible translation into Malayalam as well. A must visit.

Great, A highly recommended must visit place

It is one of the great place in Thalassery, it was the place of Hermenn Gundert, who published the first Malayalam newspaper , Rajya Samacharam, Pachimodayam. also published first malayam. English dictionary. Also setup press at his home. He was a German missionary , and grandfather of Germannovalist and Nobel laureate Herman Hesse. This house now under Tourism department, and recently renovated, and providing digital experience about Gundert works and his life. This places known illikkunnu, a calmful and cool place and can see the sight of river

The place is designed well, neat and well kept, but i hv no opinion of the information assistant. Because she just disappeared when i took my own time to read and enter another room. When she came back, i told i already read what u were supposed to tell and she is rudely replying.. Just listen to what i say. No need to tell that you read.. Is this the way to behave to guests? Later she behaved ok as i never made an issue. But i feel like telling. Otherwise, the place and staff were good. A great way to know more about Dr. Gundert, good memorial. Also, having AC or atleast fan would be good.

The place is historically attractive.But it is not well maintained.There is a college named NTTF who taken those building.This is the reason why those buildings are not maintained. It can be a good tourist spot if they leave from there.

Great place. Good atmosphere. It is now under renovation. Place where a lot of history witnessed.
