Diu Fort - Fortress in Diu - Diu, India

A good place to relive history of late medieval ages in India when Diu was under Portuguese domination. The fort was built by Portuguese and it is not a massive or inconquerable fort like other forts of India. It was a garrison fort in which they also constructed a prison in the middle of the sea. It served limited military purpose also . The courtyard of the fort is beautiful and has a Latin touch of architecture. The court at various places in its premise offers a beautiful and expansive view of the Arabian sea. A good place for photography with your loved ones . The fort gets closed at about 1800 hrs .

The Diu Fort is spanned across a very large area. it is situated on the ocean front and almost 2/3rd side is covered by water. There are many places to visit inside the fort like Lighthouses, canon mounts, gardens and such. One will need at least half a day to fully visit and enjoy their time in the fort. There are many photography-worthy places inside the fort. Also there are several places one can rest but sometimes it's hard to find a proper place to sit down and relax after walking so much.

A must visit location in Diu, but it's better to go in with a guide to truly admire the magnificent fort. Sea on the three sides and a moat build on the other end the fort stands tall, clean and well maintained. Get your dose of history, and plan to visit early mornings or late evenings as it gets hot in the afternoon and difficult to walk around.

This is a huge fort located near the shore. The fort is so big that we got tired mid-way. Almost all the places/buildings inside the fort are empty . You can go inside them, climb on the fort wall or have a walk inside. I think this fort will be the perfect place for photo-shoot with all the cementy look. When we went back in August, renovation was going on. There was no parking ticket or entry ticket. . The three major structures were the lighthouse , the Church and the entry to the shore. Canons were kept there. Its clean and green and a perfect place to spend your morning if its not too sunny.

Such a very beautiful place to visit in Diu. Best time to visit sunrise and sunset for best view and also for good weather and photography. It's a big and well maintained fort, currently renovating work is ongoing. Time : open time 8 am and close time 6 pm. You should 2 to 3 hrs is required to explore. Visit for free. Heritage and tourism attractions. Carry with water only. This is the old lighthouse which were used for the directions guidance for ship.

Beautiful and massive fort. Wildly popular amongst tourists which means a lot of crowd and noise. Good place to explore and know more about the Portuguese history.

This fort is very similar to aguada fort Goa both built by the Portuguese. But Diu fort is well maintained and free of any entry charges. However they can add a few facilities ( Clean Toilets and Clean drinking water or a canteen )for tourists with minimal entry charges . Overall very beautiful and one of the attractions in diu.

The Portuguese fortress of Diu is a formidable and imposing structure on the extreme south east point of the island. The original fortification was const nicted wider Nuno da-Cunha in 1535 AD and was rebuilt by the Viceroy D. Joue-Castro after 1546 AD. Archaeological Survey of India Vadodara Circle, Vadodara SING FORT WITH BUILDINGS INSIDE THE FORT AT DIU Crossing the outer and inner ditches, this historic citadel enters the fortress through double gateways. The gateway and the landing pier are protected by the bastion called St.George,considered to be the oldest part of the entire fort. This bastion was erected by Capt. Nannel-de-Souza-de- Supulveda, who also extended the rock cut moat from sea to sea in 1542 AD. The citadel is protected by the sea on three sides and on the land side by a deep moat cut through the solid rock and was defended by several cannons placed on bastions.One the land side (West) line of bastions facing the city. Three of the fort is an imposing double of Them are on the outer line and four on the inner line and all are named after Christian Saints. It was on this land side of the fort that the Gujarat army under Khwaja Safar and his son Rumikhan had directed all their attacks in 1546 AD. The southern wall of the castle faces the open sea. The St. Luzia bastion (1650AD) from extreme point of the castle to the eastern side. In between the bastion of St. Luzia and main bastion at Gateway are the cisterns of the kings and queens, so constructed as to collect the rain water. Within the area of the fort of Diu were located the Governor's palace the prison, barracks for the garrisons, state offices, besides several Churches. The fort enclosing an area of 56.736 Sqmts.had facilities for storage of all kinds of arms and ammunition rations and water to withstand siege of longer duration. Many underground escape channels were also provided.The fort is considered to be the most important Portuguese forts of Asia.
