Cotton Barage - Bridge in Rajamahendravaram - East Godavari, India

The Godavari River empties its water into the Bay of Bengal after flowing nearly fifty miles from the Dhavaleshwaram Barrage. Rajamahendravaram is a city situated on the left bank of Godavari River. Upstream, where the river is divided into two streams; the Gautami to the left and the Vasistha to the right, forms the joining line between the West Godavari and the East Godavari districts. The dam alignment crosses two mid stream islands. It was built by Sir Arthur Cotton in 1850's and still it is one of the Oldest, Beautiful and Major Reservoir System in South India. He made Godavari districts into Golden Lands and now they're Rice Bowls of India. Between 1970-82, the barrage was reconstructed to a height of 10.6 m. The reservoir at present has a gross storage capacity of 83 MCM(million cubic meters)(2.93 Tmc ft) and a dead storage of 2.02 Tmc ft at 40 feet (12 m) MSL. The Barrage consists of 4 arms with 175 bays having a length of 3.599 Kms. It benefits 65 mandals of East and West Godavari with 2 crops annually supplying water utilisation of nearly 100 Tmc ft. I always say Christian missionaries are not given their rightful credit in our history books. However, Sir Arthur Cotton, an engineer with the British's East India Company, and fondly called as the 'missionary engineer', is an exception. Considered a God-like figure in many parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to this day, his contribution in making Andhra Pradesh 'the rice bowl of India' is enormous. His engineering marvels like 'the dowaleshwaram barrage', 'Prakasam barrage', 'Kurnool Cuddapah canal (KC Canal)' among several others irrigation projects testify about his service and dedication towards the people of India. The relationship between Dowleswaram Cotton Barrage & people of Andhra is emotional. The barrage paved paths to modern system big irrigation through channeling the River Godavari water into different streams to fertile the Massive alluvial plain lands of Godavari District's. In the early 19th century a British Engineer understood the needs of the farmers & forecasted the future & took this mountainous task of channeling the river water. He surveyed, understood, built second level leadership to take decisions & proved if a human being thinks he can turn into being human. Hats off to Sir. Arthur Cotton . This barrage is a scenic place to visit & can feel the channeling if Godavari water. In this place you will find abundance of fresh Godavari fish, shellfish etc; during the peak monsoon season POLASA a migratory fish is also available here.
