Bukhari Baba Mazar - Shrine in Cuttack - Cuttack, India

Situated in Cuttack district of Odisha, Bukhari Baba Mazar is an ancient dargah of Sufi Saint Hazrat Sayeed Ali Saheed Bukhari. It was built inside the Barabati fort in the year1468 and is a beautiful piece of Mughal architecture. He is one of those unique saints who has two dargahs, one at Cuttack and another at Jajpur district of Odisha. According to the Moulvi, his head is worshipped at Cuttack and his body at Jajpur. It is said that the saint came to Cuttack with the invading Afgan Army. In a war, he was brutally attacked where his head was severed from the body. It fell on the very spot where the dargah now stands. However the saint reached Jajpur on a horse back without his head and fell down on reaching the spot where his other dargah stands. He is said to be a very pious person and revered highly among the people here. People throng the place round the week, mostly to pay homage and to ward off any evil spell. People are given holy water to drink and apply bibhuti. There is a small yet beautiful pond in the premises, which has great historical significance. It is said till a century back, when people come to visit the shrine, utensils came out of the pond as per the requirement of the visiting party to cook food. However after a few cases of theft, it stopped popping up.

This is the tomb of a well known and widely followed Sufi Saint Bukhari Baba. He is regarded as the protector Saint of Cuttack City. The Mazar has been re-developed in the last 10 years. Now it's well maintained. As it's situated on the edge of a lake, one side of the shrine used to keep on sinking into the earth year on year. Now they have remedied the problem by constructing a deep foundation on that edge. The place is very peaceful and serene. You can spend hours at the Mazar praying or just reflecting / contemplating. The devotees are not limited to any one community. People from all communities visit the shrine.

The surrounding greenery from the Barabati Fort park add up to the calm and serenity. The fragrance of the many incense sticks coupled with the soothing calm and spirituality of the faithful, makes it one of my most sought after places to escape the hustle bustle of city life and attain inner peace.
