Bankim Bhawan - Featured Reviews (167)
The place is located beside the Hooghly river. This is the place where Rishi Bankim Chandra wrote "Vandematram". So it is also known as "Vandematram Bhawan". Beside the bhawan there is "Jora ghat". Bankim Bhawan is a historical place. It is one of the famous places in Hooghly-Chinsurah. One can visit the place free of cost. Some photos of the life of Rishi Bankim Chandra are represented there. Many exhibitions are held at the back portion of the building.
The importance of this heritage house can be attributed to the fact that India's National Song "Vande Mataram" was composed here by the great literary icon Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. Today, this place serves as a museum for history enthusiasts. During my visit I saw that the entry is free for everyone. Inside this house you will come across two to three big empty rooms. The walls of every room are decorated with historical posters showcasing facts and information, especially pertaining to the life of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay & India's independence movement. You can also sit beside the River Hooghly, as it flows exactly near this house. Overall it's a decent museum to visit, but being a significant historical heritage site I would suggest the government to amplify & upgrade the facilities through better maintanence standards & modern infrastructures.
Historically very rich place. A lot of renowned and famous writers used to be coming to this place and one of them was Bankim babu. (Our very own Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay). His place is well maintained and restored. The only thing is there is no security at the entrance and many people just roaming inside to loiter around. The govement should protect it properly along with respect and proper guidance towards the great rennaissance of Bengal. Highly recommended. 10/10.
Bankim Bhawan is situated at Joraghat. The national song of India "Bandemataram" was composed in this house by the great literary figure Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay when he was posted as Dy Magistrate here. Vande Mataram, penned by novelist Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, is the country's national song but the house he wrote it in is nowhere on the state government's radar. The state heritage commission has asked the government for Rs 30 lakh to restore the nearly 200-year-old single-storeyed house locally known as Vande Mataram Bhavan at Joraghat in Hooghly's Chinsurah. The building, bought by the government in 1996, has been unoccupied for the last 12 years since it ceased to be the office of the information and cultural affairs department. Situated on a bigha on the banks of the Hooghly, the building's main gate has fallen apart and walls are agape with wide cracks. The neighbourhood fears it will collapse as trees and plants have sprouted all over. Bankim Chandra also wrote Krishnakanter Will and Rajani in the same house.
The Bankim Bhawan is located in Chinsurah. The house is sanctified with the footsteps of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. It is the birth place of the national song of India-Vandemataram. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay stayed at Joraghat on the banks of Ganga in the 1870s. The Vandemataram song which was later included in his novel Ananda Math was composed in this house and later on the song played a vital role in the Indian Independence movement. Post independence of India, the song was recognized as the national song of India.
Eminent bengali novelist Bankim Chandra Chatterjee stayed here from 1877 to 1882. He was appointed as Dy. Magistrate of Hooghly District then. During his years at this house, he wrote popular novels like "Krishnakanter Will" and others. Some sources say, that he wrote Vande Mataram here. Vande Mataram was written before his "Ananda Math" was published. The song later included in "Ananda Math". Ananda Math was published in 1882. According to Govt. Sources, Vande Mataram was first sung in this house on 12th July, 1881. The music was given by Khetranath Mukherjee and the song was sung in Mallar Raga. Many years later, great poet Rabindranath Tagore composed the music for Vande Mataram. Now Vande Matarm is our National Song. You can visit this place to feel the related history. This place can be reached by Toto from Hooghly or Chinsurah Station. This place is open to all but the best time to visit this place is between 11 AM to 5 PM.
