People must visit this place to admire its beautiful engravings, the breathtaking design of the exteriors, the sculptures, Chola art gallery and other historic architectural aspects which makes the visit most memorable one. Extreme and underrated One of the best temples I have visited in my life. Sadly, most people are not aware of this great temple built by Rajaraja Chola son. The architecture is simply mind blowing. The sculptures are gorgeous and I could not figure out how they had built a masterpiece like this 1000+ years ago. There is a green lawn around the temple for visitors to sit and relax after exploring the architectural masterpiece. It'd take around 1-2 hours to have a good look around the temple. The temple is a ruin. It used to be different and big before invaders shattered the outer structure and partially the inner ones. The government has to take proper measures in maintaining toilets. The toilets were closed when I visited and the cafeteria outside is not at all good. Connectivity to other towns from here is not good, so try to come and go in a car to avoid the scorching heat.

One of the must visit places when you do a South Indian drive. Watch out for parking mafia. The roads to the temple are very wide and very comfortable and some of the best roads down here. The temple is similar to Thanjavur temple. There is ample space to sit and relax and spend an evening with family or friends. The temple is well maintained considering the age and also there are many sculptures that modern science will find hard to describe the same. The place is crowded on no moon day or full mood day and hence plan around it. This place brings a lot of peace of mind and calmness.

Mesmerizing architecture..beyond our imagination... The architecture of Gangaikonda Cholapuram is really impressive. The main part of the temple has a big stone idol, and it's surrounded by walls and tall towers. These walls have lots of detailed carvings and pictures that tell stories from Hindu dharma and the history of the Chola kings. The tallest tower over the main part of the temple is a remarkable example of Chola architecture and shows how skilled they were in building. Lesser know fact is u will never see tye shadow of gopurams on top of tye temple.this temple is made up of granite which is not seen 100 km of that area ...so u can imagine how they bought these stone here.nandi is carved from single granite rock..facts will blown ur mind ...but it's True People must visit this place to admire its beauty and learn about its history. How fortune we are to witnesses such Architectures.we should feel proud what we have ...incredibleindia

GANGAIKONDA CHOLAPURAM Ariyalur is best known for the Gangaikondacholisvarar temple in Gangaikondacholapuram, the biggest temple constructed during the reign of Rajendra-I in Ariyalur region. Following the conquest of the Gangetic plains in A.D. 1023 Rajendra-I built a great city called Gangaikondacholapauram and a Siva temple Gangaikondacholisvarar and a lake Chola Gangam in commemoration of his victory. The place, the temple and the lake (Chola Gangam) are the living embodiments of the heroism of the Tamils who unfurled the Chola's Tiger flag on the banks of the River Ganges. He also shifted his capital from Thanjavur to this newly built town. From his period to the end of the Chola family rule in A.D.1279 this city was the capital for the Chola Empire for a period of 256 years. The gigantic stone temple which he built in this place is rich repository of beautiful sculptures of middle Chola period. This city is celebrated in the literature of Muvar ula of Ottakuttar and Kalingattuparani of Jayankondar. Rajendra's Gangetic expedition was over by his 11th regal year (A.D.1023). The earliest reference which mentions the city of Gangaikondacholapuram is a record of A. D. 1027 of him. Hence it is evident that the city was built in memory of his great victory between A.D. 1023 and 1027. The recently discovered Esalam Copper plates of A.D. 1036 of Rajendra-I give concrete evidence that he built the Gangaikondacholisvarar temple. Another record of A.D. 1068 of Virarajendra in Gangaikondacholapuram which is the earliest record in the temple mentions about the grant of villages to the Gangaikondacholisvarar temple by Rajendra-I in his 24th year (A.D. 1036). These evidences indicate that the siva temple was built between A.D. 1023 and 1036 although the earliest extant record in this big temple belongs to A. D. 1068 of Virarajendra. This temple is a living history of the Cholas in stone from the period of Rajendra-I and a beautiful gallery of Chola art and architecture. Many sculptures brought from Andhra, Karnataka and Bengal as war trophies are also preserved in the temple and in the nearby villages. Chandesura Anugraha Murthy and Sarasvathy are the most beautiful sculptures of the temple. At present it is under the control of ASI and the HR&CE and recently the UNESCO declared the temple as one of the world heritage monument. A long time ago, the mighty king of South India, Rajendra Chola, had conquered much of India's southern peninsula. And to celebrate his conquests, he wanted to build a new capital. To anoint this new city, he wanted nothing less than the sacred waters from the Ganges. So he set on a long expedition with his army to bring back the holy water from the river. But the expedition was not without danger. How did the Chola king not only conquer the kingdoms along the way but also go on to make the largest manmade lakes in India? Gangaikonda Cholapuram was the capital city of Rajendra Chola, the greatest Chola king that ever lived. Born to an illustrious father, Raja Raja Chola, this mighty king ruled over large parts of south India over 1000 years ago. He wanted to anoint his new capital city with water from River Ganga. So he sent his army on a long expedition from Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu all the way to modern day Bangladesh. His army defeated many kingdoms en route, and brought back water from the holy river Ganga. He poured this water into a lake he built, the Chola Gangam, one of the largest manmade lakes in India till date. Gangaikonda Cholan literally means the Chola king who conquered the (plains of) River Ganga. Rajendra Chola commanded the largest blue water navy in Indian history, and used it effectively to subdue Srivijaya, a southeast Asian kingdom that lay 3000 kilometres away. The magnificent Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple was built by him and it still stands tall as a charming celebration of his might and power

This temple is built by Rajendra Chola I who is son of Rajraja Chola I who built the Brihadeesvara temple of Thanjavur. His don Rajraja Chola II built the Airavatesvara Temple in Dharasuram. It is a Shiva temple. It was built in 1100 centuty. The stone carvings in this temple are mibd blowing. There are carvings depicting Ardhanarishwara (half Shiva and half Parvati), Harihara (half Shiva and hslf Vishnu), Goddess Saraswati, Vishnu avatara. There is also one particular carving near right side exit which shows Lord Shiva garlanding Rajendra Chola I. The nandi at the entrace is giant. It is so big, that one standing at the feet will have to crane the neck all the way up to look at it. We were there during evening and pretty much spent the time till nightfall, but our eyes and heart were still not satisfied with the beauty of this absolutely amazing masterpiece. Pro tip: This temple is located near the village of Gagaikonda Cholapuram. It is near a highway. You can reach here by private vehicle or cab. If you are confortable with public transport, you can come here by bus. There are number of buses coming this way from Kumbhakonam. Come here early morning or in the evening. When golden light plays its tricks, the temple looks even more beautiful. Check out the pics.

Underrated Majestic Temple with exceptional sculptures evidencing the magnificent Cholas architecture. UNESCO heritage site yet facing Low maintenance as compare to the great Thanjur temple where even on main deity (shiva) i spotted cockroach on the linga and bats around sanctum sanctorum. Besides the view of shrine filled sculpture was soothing and rejuvenating. Must visit this divine place where enormous stones, fortification, history, devotion joints together.
