I needed one night for business and live locally. Other hotels wanted triple the price with a local discount. This hotel is nothing to look at from the outside and is old, but that's part of the charm. The grounds are beautiful with nice spots to relax, the staff is amazing and the breakfast was wonderful with local fruits and what appeared to be homemade muffins.
Over 100 USD/night for an infrastructure like shown in the attached ? This „hotel“ needs serious maintenance. The ladies at the counter are running the place, so no blame on them. But the property manager/ owner whatever you call it, must be a greedy-preneur overcharging tourists while offering far below standard. Even a badly run hostel has better infrastructure & service than this. Also, all negative reviews about noisy rooms due to thin walls are correct. Very poor mentality towards tourists traveling so far away to enjoy Hawaii. What a shame, deeply disrespectful.
Our stay at the Wild Ginger Hotel was wonderful. The hotel exudes a quaint charm with its lovely views of the ocean and a touch of jungle ambiance, offering a unique and picturesque setting. While the facilities could benefit from a bit of an overhaul, the overall atmosphere more than makes up for it.
The staff were friendly and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile. The free breakfast was a nice touch, with decent food to start the day off right. Although the rooms lack air conditioning, the ceiling fans provided a comfortable night's sleep. The 3 hotel cats were friendly and keep the geckos at bay.
This is a great hotel to sleep (not a room to lounge in all day) while staying in Hilo.
A little TLC and this place could be magical.
Lovely historical building, nice decor, and beautiful surrounding gardens. And the staff were friendly!
No A/C which would be fine but it’s just too humid. If the rooms were resealed and the bathroom vent was replaced the room might be perfectly fine with just a dehumidifier. Also bugs and evidence of past mold.
The breakfast had a decent variety, not everything was great though.
Decent enough for the price! But definitely needs some work.
Comfortable bed but everything feels ancient and the signs say they want to preserve the history of the building (built in 1911). But it does not feel that safe. Nice staff though
Would like to put 5 stars because I really loved this place. With it's old fashion colonial style, and the tropical forest coming to your room.
The employees are very nice, always helping, thanks to them.
The location is good and calme too, wich is a good thing.
About the missing star:
Really need maintenance and renovation.
My room, I had the ultim far one, that seems to be the best one too.
Even without air conditioning and a fan rotating the bad way, I did not had heating problem with the sea air.
Seems diferent in other rooms leaving the door opened.
The bed is good too.
Not a room for electronics era, with only one plug on the basement of the bed light ... and the Wi-Fi is not reaching there. However the Wi-Fi is good in the lobby.
There's the place for the TV, but only the place for it, by the way, you can imagine it.
Don't spend time trying switching off the bathroom light, no way out of turning off the bulb.
The shower works, but open the hot water 15mn before being able to use and you will not waste a lot of water...
The lobby is a cool place with good Wi-Fi. It's as well the place for the breakfast, when it will come and if you are not the last one.
There's no kitchen at the hotel, then the breakfast is very weak. Be careful of the water machine that, if not empty, deliver hot water on the ambiante option, as well as the cold one.
You may have the sensation being drunk, particularly at night. Don't worry, that's just the floor playing with you.

My husband booked this stay due to its proximity to Mauna Kea after arriving on the big island and heading up mountain. It is decent for a night stay. Staff was friendly. I would not say it’s great for families with kids. Esp young kids. You have to be prepared for some little gnat type bugs and old flooring and the bare basics in the room. They had a great little breakfast spread in the am of hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit (papaya and pineapple) and bagels plus juice and coffee. This place has hostel feels to me and would be great for young people travelling all over.
Don't be fooled by the pictures. There may be nice rooms featured, but there is only one, and we never saw it. Place should be condemned. Worse, I have seen in over 40 years. Nothing nothing in the pics represents the truth. 1st room was NOT CLEANED. 2nd room was in such poor condition we decided sleeping in the car would be SO MUCH BETTER.
