Amazing place to see cranes wintering in here. Great staff who will answer your questions and provide interesting information about these amazing birds.
Wheeler National wildlife refuges is one of the nicest places to view waterfowl in America. Every kind of waterfowl can be seen here from the observatory to the blinds. I've never seen so many cranes in one place. It's free and a must see for bird lovers
Absolutely amazing place to watch winter migrating birds. Hundreds of sandhill cranes can be seen. If you are lucky, you can even spot a whooping crane or two. They also get white pelicans and other water birds. Parking is ample at the visitor center and there are a variety of bird blinds built around the grounds.
We came to the visitors center because we saw on their Facebook page that the cranes had begun to return to the refuge for the winter. We did see cranes, but we were told that we were a little early for the big flocks of cranes. We enjoyed the experience, anyway, and plan to come back for the festival in January.
Though closed due to very bad ice, the cranes were assembled en masse at the gate. Across the road the lake proved just as rewarding for water fowl. Can't wait to revisit during better weather.
Lotsa trash so we try to bring a garbage bag and gloves to clean up everytime we fish! Forgot last time and it was really bad! But the fishing is good and the peacefulness is priceless! Just keep an eye out for the gators and you'll be golden!
Awesome experience seeing the sandhill cranes. Definitely would love to come back.
I go there often to see the migratory birds such as cranes and white pelicans. I do wish they had more hiking trails, but there are more than there used to be. We kayak there also and there are alligators. It’s a beautiful refuge.

They have the best fries, and their honey mustard is great. I'm pretty sure their honey mustard started the craze, and it remains top of the list. I always get a club sandwich, and it's so big I take home most of it. Their rolls are made in house and
