Villa Sur - Motel in Calexico - 304 Fourth St, USA

December 4, 2008||||A friend and I stayed here after reading the two reviews on this motel. The reason for the stay was to get dental work done in Mexicali which is a short walk over the border from Villa Sur.||||Previously we stayed at the Lucerna in Mexicali which is charming, with great food, several pools and also a bargain. However, we did not want to wait in line to get back to the US this time. Another option would be walk over the border and take a taxi to the Lucerna. We also stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which is several miles from the border and about twice the price of the Villa Sur. ||||The hotel does not have a website and we wanted to see a room before booking so we walked in, looked, and took a room. Price with tax and a continental breakfast was $52.50! The room was spotless, the TV worked, we had two double beds, and the room was quiet. While the property looks mid-century, the windows have been upgraded with new double-panes.||||I would recommend this property to anyone who wants a bargain in downtown Calexico. I was passing through Calexico on a road trip and booked a night at the Villa Sur based on poetwrangler's review on this website. For $47, I got a king bed, fridge/microwave, soaker tub, heat lamp, and full cable lineup. The room had not been renovated in a long time (early 1960s?), but the furnishings were in great condition and everything was scrupulously clean. The Villa Sur has an off-street parking lot, small swimming pool, and full breakfast spread.||||Make no mistake -- this is not a luxury hotel. It is, however, an excellent budget choice that I would make again in a heartbeat.

From the outside, this hotel looks very dated and just a little on the dicey side. Inside, however, the rooms are clean, comfortable, well-maintained and reasonably priced. This is a downtown hotel, so you should expect all the usual downtown noises. ||||We did have a couple of issues. 1. We had to get an early start the next day, so when we arrived, we confirmed with the front desk that breakfast began at 6am. That's what the sign on the front desk said, and that's what the front desk clerk confirmed for us. However, the next morning, when we arrived at 6am for breakfast, a different front desk clerk told us breakfast wouldn't be available for another hour. Why? Because daylight savings time wasn't yet being recognized in Mexico, where it was still just 5am. But we were in California! We had to get going regardless, so this meant we missed the breakfast that was supposed to be included in our room rate and had to pay for breakfast elsewhere. 2. The TV in our room provided cable channels, but none of the major networks. Certainly not a huge deal, but there was a program we were expecting to be able to watch, and were unable to do so. On the upside, staff was kind enough to allow us to leave our car in the enclosed hotel parking lot all day, even though we wouldn't be staying at the hotel a second night.||||So, all in all, a reasonable deal for decent accommodations super close to the border. A few glitches, but still a good value for what you get.

A friend and I had appointments for dental work in Mexicali and wanted a place to stay in Calexico that was clean, safe, and within walking distance to the border. This is hard to find on-line in Calexico! I found this gem using the Yellow Pages, called directly, and reserved our rooms for two nights. We stayed six. It is clean, pleasant, secure, and a five-minute walk to Mexicali. The only down-side was the wireless wasn't functioning properly, but they don't charge for phone calls and Calexico has a local AOL connection, so it wasn't much of a problem. ||I really wasn't expecting much for the money ($50 a night), but it really is a little gem.

It's now a low income housing.
