Tuxachanie Hiking Trail (West End Trailhead) - Hiking area in Saucier - 26204-26154 US 49, USA

Spent a beautiful, cool Dec afternoon hiking this trail from 1:30pm- 3:45pm. I’m not the fastest hiker due to disabilities. However, I enjoyed being out on this trail. I use trekking poles and for the most part, it was an easy hike. There’s a few places that you have to maneuver through wash outs in red clay. I did see a young couple turn back because she slipped on the way down. My trekking poles helped me manage through. Slow and steady. My 2 daughters came with me. They’re in their 20’s and hiked together ahead of me. I had 8 people pass me by, mainly couples, but a few kids, too. I noticed most people hiked to the bridge at the creek, about 1 1/2 miles and then turned back. That’s what I did. My girls hiked 3 miles in and said they never saw anybody. I like that there’s mileage markers posted for 1/2 and full miles and I loved seeing all of the fungi along the trail. Mine was more of a nature walk where my girls were trying to get the miles in. Great afternoon all the way around! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was the parking lot isn’t big enough to accommodate everyone on a pretty day. We had to wait for somebody to leave to park. There’s not a garbage can and we packed out trash from the trail. The parking lot is over run with garbage, as well. Once you get beyond the trash, it’s a beautiful, peaceful journey with no road noise. Enjoy!

Very nice maintained trail. We went to the 3.5 marker and it took 2 hours at a decent pace. Mostly easy, but a few challenging spots through creek crossings and uphills. On the way back we challenged ourselves and made it back in a little over an hour. Great scenery. Passed only a few people.

This trail was quite a nice surprise. The trail is well beat down, so it's easy to navigate. It's on the east side of Highway 49, just above the Highway 67 N merge. Paved parking is available for about 20 cars. The place needs a trash can or bin put in. People are going to litter, but if there's a can, there's no excuse. We saw a green snake on this walk.

We had a nice hike here on a Thursday afternoon in March. We only saw 6 people and 3 dogs. The trail is wide and well marked, but not suit for strollers or wheelchairs. It is a hike and not a walk. You start in a pine forest that blends into a deciduous forest and then pine scrub in the first few miles. We hiked in 3 miles and the trail is not a loop and goes much further. The trail is very well marked, and you shouldn't need to worry about getting lost.

I totally loved doing part of this trail! Made it about 5 and a half miles in and sat down at the pond. It was truly a great hike. Lots of things to look at flora and fauna. The bridges were messed up but it added to the adventure. I thought the trail was pretty straightforward to follow. There were little trails that went off the path of roads but the path was well marked. There was no restroom at the trailhead but there was one at the pond and a picnic area. There was no playground though. Definitely dog friendly, but I would keep them on a leash around the swampy areas haha.

Love this trail! Most of it is not flat or have an even footing so I would say it's more more intermediate/advanced for sure. I live for a good challenge. This trail has inclines/declines, places where you have to reach to step up or down, bridges over water, areas of clay where its washed out creating "stairs", exposed roots, holes, etc. I would not suggest bringing small children or ones you have to push in a stroller etc. If you have knee/hip/lower body issues I would avoid it as well. And please watch your step for those who are fit and like to jog/run like myself. I've slipped on pine straw, loose sand, and wet clay. I'm not trying to scare anyone away just want to inform those of you who may get hurt thinking this might be an easy/flat trail with safe footing. I do know it's dog friendly and they love it here. Older kids do too. And the first 1.5 miles are heavily shaded (unless the sun is directly above you) so its really nice if it's hot or you aren't trying to get sunburned. There are a few side trails to the little creek. Its very beautiful and peaceful. Fyi: There isn't any benches or tables (not that i would want or need any) or restrooms or fountains etc just in case you were wondering. I really do love this trail. I try to come often as I can. Easy to access on HWY 49 near the HWY 67 intersection. Its easy to miss if you aren't looking 😆

The trail is very well maintained. You don't have to push hedge or briars out of the way and there are several places with beautiful views of creeks and swampy areas. You can detour a bit to get close to the water's edge and come back. They do need to fix one place where the wooden planks are caving in, but other than that, the trail was safe!

BRING BUG SPRAY! There is this fly that just won't leave you alone no matter how you swat at them. Other than that I had a great time. I hiked in two miles and back out because of weather. There's a lake, small bridges and creek crossings with a few wash-outs on the trail that kept everything interesting. Saw lizards, a snake, and a shadow ran past (something the size of a large cat?) on the hike. Heard a bunch of noisy birds, one was definitely a raptor. Watch out of stumps in the middle of the trail, and always keep an eye out for falling/ half fell trees. Also keep an eye out for a huge spider and it's web (shudder)... it's like a orb weaver type, gets about 4 inches in diameter. Didn't get to finish and look forward to coming back to finish the trail.
