The Tropics - American restaurant in Winthrop Harbor - 301 North Point Dr, USA

I wanted a relaxing lunch, looking out at the boats and the water. It would’ve been more relaxing, if a situation had been handled better with an elderly patron and his dog. Reason why four stars. My chicken tenders were the best I think I have ever had.I loved the batter on them. The coleslaw was good also, so was my margarita !! Unfortunately, just about everything has breading and my friend is allergic to gluten, so he just had the cold shrimp.

Nice place situated right on the lake next to the marina. Decent parking and seemed ADA compliant. The steak was seasoned very well and was great. The sides really made the overall meal disappointing. Choice of potato was chips or fries…not what I’d expect with a $30 steak. Veggies were from a frozen bag of mixed veggies, which was really disappointing. With a produce stand just a couple miles away, why not offer local fresh produce options? And offer proper potato options such as baked or mashed? Overall it was a nice place, but I won’t come back for steak.

Uncrowded, so immediate seating at the "best seat in the house" out on the deck. Good classic bar sandwiches and midwest fried fare. Beautiful ambiance overlooking the harbor. Casual and quick with great service.

We ate outside on the terrace overlooking the harbor on a beautiful evening. Even though we got there fairly early on a Saturday evening (5:00) the tables were filling up. Our server was friendly and attentive even though it seemed there was a long wait between placing our orders and being served. The wait probably wasn't as long as it seemed but we had a 3 year old with us! When it arrived, the food was plentiful and tasty. The melted cheese nuggets were shared and we all ordered the Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches so I can't vouch for how anything else tasted.

Edit: we went back again and ordered the pizza, definitely upgraded to five stars based on the quality there. A medium pizza easily feeds three people, and it's a great, crispy thin crust. Diverse, simple menu with something that appeals to everyone (even puppies!), and daily specials. Even after a few drinks and a main, you can escape under $30 a head. The service is friendly and attentive.

Great spot, off the beaten path. Service will depend on time you show up and the weather. Food is always on point and the mai tais are good (maybe a bit weak for us) but the tap beer is crisp and fresh. Been here at least a dozen times over the years and keep coming back. Beach next door is the best in Lake County and the new(er) tap house on the lake is excellent.

Awesome place to host our 45th class reunion. The entire team was fabulous. Our bartender was over the top with attentiveness and detail. Thanks for a wonderful night.
