Great place to watch sports, enjoy a beer and have some good bar food. Whether downstairs, or upstairs this grand old tavern has several interesting sections and televisions for keeping up with a variety of sporting events. I believe there is an area where you can drink on the second floor balcony. Our food was good and well proportioned. This place has a good feel to it, like putting on a comfortable jacket, and a cordial atmosphere.
So i went here on a cold night and I'm not sure they have heat... But that did not bother us much, we just kept our jackets on. The brisket queso was the best and whatever they season the chips with makes them hard to stop eating. I highly recommend you order those. As for the other items we ordered they were ok. The fish and chips needed to be cooked a bit longer to make the fish crispy. Next time I'll just ask for extra crispy and see how it comes out. Service was great, drinks keep you warm. Decent selection of whiskey.
We watched the NBA finals here, there was also a UT baseball game going on. Both events had a good amount of people interested in the game so that was a plus to the atmosphere. It was a little hard to actually find a good spot to catch what we wanted though. The service was attentive and friendly. The food was good as well though it could have been a little better. The sweet potato fries were not the best, cold when they came out and not very crispy. The tex-mex burger was very good, the Philly sub was pretty good, the margaritas were pretty good.
Our bartender RULED. He was great, the food was delicious, beers were cold. It was a *little* loud cause of the football playoffs. Might want to consider bringing earplugs, but overall a great experience.
Decided to come here after a couple of recommendations from family members on our visit to Austin. Our bartender, Bill, made this a truly enjoyable experience. He was friendly and knowledgeable about not only The Tavern history, but also the various beer and food offerings. He was attentive and made sure our drinks were never empty. We took his recommendation to try the white wings with Buffalo sauce and the pretzel, and we were not disappointed. Thank you very much for the friendly and inviting experience provided by Bill and for the great food recommendations! We will definitely be coming here again next time we visit Austin.
Visited the Tavern after hearing about it on a podcast. The staff were super inviting and eager to share their experiences. Super fun experience and hope to visit again soon.
Came on a Sunday evening with some friends. Not crowded but very friendly staff. We ordered a variety of food and drink. My salad had fresh greens and hot chicken and was excellent. The portions were generous. The chicken fried chicken looked delicious. Parking was easy. Recommend this comfy bar and grill
An unspoilt Austin institution, The Tavern is exactly what it pretends to be: a great all-around "local" that welcomes everyone with warm hospitality. There's an Old World charm to The Tavern, and the burgers are excellent. No gimmicks, just fresh product, prepared with attention.
