Must see! Well preserved historical home in Newport News. Interesting history and special exhibits housed in this home owned by a black lawyer in the late 1800's/early 1900's.
Very warm, inviting conversation about community growth and achievement took place during this tour. Mr. Pope was very congenial, knowledgeable. HU told HU who was boss, elders schooled youth, youth inspired seniors. A solid reminder of who we are, what we can accomplish together.
For recent or long term residents of the Hampton Roads area, this lovingly restored home is an essential visit to know & understand the social & political history of this region. Mr & Mrs Newsome shared their oasis with the African American communities of the area - providing shelter, meeting spaces, political discourse & legal recourse.
