The Briars Bed and Breakfast - Bed & breakfast in Natchez - 31 Irving Ln, USA

Absolute worst hotel I think we have ever stayed in! Cheap for $94/night so I guess we shouldn’t have expected much. We came to see family and being that both nephews have recently added babies to their families, we chose to stay in a hotel as to not burden them. We arrive at the hotel and we’re told that the pool, restaurant, and bar are closed (none of this information was told to us before arrival). I asked if discounts were being given since it was 95 degrees outside and there was no pool. No, of course not, we were told that this information should have been given to us prior to arrival (so I guess it’s our fault that we didn’t know.) Ok, so no discount, no biggie. We get in to the room, first, the light when entering the room doesn’t work, the beds are mattresses wrapped in bedding sitting on top of exposed box springs, the ironing board looks like it has blood stains on it, and I wouldn’t dare give my baby a bath in the nasty looking tub. Room was non-refundable and we didn’t plan on spending much time in it anyway so we decide to just make do and unpack the vehicle. We get over the fact that it’s a terrible place to stay and go out to do our thing in Natchez the next day. Around 4:00 pm, we get a call from the front desk clerk asking if we want our belongings thrown in the trash. “Excuse me, what?” She informed us that their housekeeper was cleaning to prepare for the next guest and our belongings were still in there. ALL of our belongings because we had a TWO NIGHT reservation. She informed that their system was showing only one night. We had to stop what we were doing with family, come back to the hotel, and prove to them that we had a 2 night reservation, show proof of the bank withdrawal that matched the 2 night total on the reservation, and the clerk called her supervisor who informed her the room had already been rented out to someone else for the night. My husband informed them that yes, it had been BY US! We had already paid. The clerk told us that we could go ahead and she would handle it. The poor desk clerk was trying, but her supervisor was zero support to her from what I could tell. Other guests were arriving, seeing the sign that stated that “the pool, bar, and restaurant were currently closed” and were just as surprised as we were….guess they weren’t told either. I called the choice properties guest line and was basically told that they made a note of it, but to take it up with the general manager. Gee, what service! Never again! Pay the extra to stay at a nice hotel, I promise it’s worth it!

The Briars in Natchez, Mississippi, is one of the finest examples of early southern plantation style architecture. Built in 1818, at 31 Irving Lane, on the highest promontory south of St. Louis, overlooking the Mississippi River, it was the site of the wedding of future Confederate States of America president Jefferson Davis and Varina Howell in 1845. The 10,000-square-foot mansion features an 80-foot-long covered porch with twin staircases, 19th century chandeliers and a row of archways that lend a sense of opulence. At one time, the house had seven bedrooms and a schoolhouse. Today, the bed-and-breakfast has 12 guest rooms with private balconies or patios. Sit on the porch and watch ships cruise by. Book the Jefferson Davis suite with a king-size bed, private balcony, separate living room, free wi-fi, cable TV, private bath and shower, air conditioning and free cable/satellite TV internet access. The Briars was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Everything was amazing. Beautiful grounds, beautiful view, outstanding service staff.
