We arrived at The Birchmere around 5:45 and the parking was already filling up. In hindsight, it would have been easier to leave if we would have backed into the spot but everyone was nice when leaving and we still got out quickly and easily. Walking up to the building, the first thing you notice are the beautiful murals to let you know that you are DEFINITELY in the right place! After getting our line ticket at the box office we sat in the bar area waiting for the door to open. They called numbers and everyone got into the concert hall quickly. The seating is very close together but manageable...could be troublesome for handicapped and disabled though. The servers were quick and efficient at getting our orders and drinks refilled. The food was really good and it was nice not having to figure out how to eat when coming right from work! The venue is filled with closely packed tables but right up to the stage! You could literally reach out and touch them on stage if you wanted to! Overall and very nice venue and I would definitely return!
My mom and I saw The Voices of Motown Christmas show at the Birchmere. This was our first time and we had a great time. I didn't realize the venue is as large as it is, but it has a cozy feel to it. While there were a few folks dressed to impress, there's no dress code so you don't feel like you have to dress up. Come as you are. I was even more impressed with the food and the service. We ordered wings and the Ginger glazed chicken thighs with mac and cheese and smothered cabbage. What in the world did the cook know about smothered cabbage...it was delicious!!! Done right! My Momma was impressed! Our food was out within 20 minutes or less. It's a well-oiled machine. Their system works! And not to mention the free parking. A rare treat in the DMV. Overall, it was a great experience and I look forward to our next visit.
Love the selection of live music artist that come to Birchmere! The food is great the catfish, red beans and rice is one of my favorite dishes! When I am in the DMV area this one of my go to spots!
One of the coolest dining venues I’ve ever been to. You could literally feel the history in the building. Last night we got to see Tab perform live and it was absolutely amazing. He may be the best blues guitarist alive. We will definitely be back. Thank you for a night I’ll never forget. Noting better than a little Louisiana and Virginia. 😉
What an amazing venue! Food was delicious, service was outstanding. No bad seats in the place! Highly recommend
Great sound & intimate performances in an old school music hall. Been a bunch of times and will go back again. The stage brings the artists very close to the crowd so you get a bird’s eye view of the artists at work. Performers often comment on the intimacy and sound quality at the Birchmere that make it a legendary venue for both the musicians & audiences alike. The seating can get a little tight at sold out shows but there are really no “bad” seats in the house (aside from the columns holding up the roof). You can go early and get a Deli-number for entry into the music hall for the best seats. Food is so/so but the service is good and they have local craft beers on the menu. The bar has overflow seating where you can watch performances live on video screens if the show is sold out. With about 15-20 shows a month, they feature something for all musical tastes. Go see what live music should be at the Birchmere soon!
If you are a true music lover and want to experience the best in sound and lights then this is the place to be. The food and service are great with a very friendly staff. Not a bad seat in the house!
Went to The Birchmere for a concert and really had a great time. There was plenty of parking and close to the door. There is a bar where you can have drinks and get a snack before the show starts. There was plenty of seating in the waiting area to make all guest comfortable. You enter the auditorium area on a number system first come first serve you make sure you get there at 5pm to get a good number. Luck for me I was right by the stage. You pick your own seats. Once you are seated you can order more drinks and order entrees. I had Bacon Grilled cheese with a delicious Caesar salad and my husband got prime rib sub sandwich and fries. There is no drink menu but they will make what you want. The staff is on point and kept my glass full. The only complaint I have was the carpet needs to be replaced there is a thick smell of mildew when you first walk into the auditorium and it is clear it’s coming from the carpet it’s very old and outdated. But over all it was a great night. I definitely will attend other shows here

When the Civil War started and the Union took Alexandria many escaped slaves, called Contraband, poured into the city to escape their former masters. This overcrowding caused a high mortality rate. The soldiers seized a undeveloped plot of land and
