Texas Tavern - Featured Reviews (1979)
Loved our experience at this 24/7 diner in downtown Roanoke. Almost a century old and the texas-style burgers were great and the chili was solid (especially after adding mustard.) We were there around breakfast on weekday but could see this place as a smash when clubs and breweries close for the night.
I always love coming in here it brings the community together. The service is always fast and everyone is polite. If you need anything they are quick to get it for you. It is cash only.
You don't go here for 5 star food. You go because it's like stepping back in time. Food wasn't bad...the beans were pretty good, actually. Can't beat the price. Just a neat, old school lunch counter.
Another place that I somehow missed out reviewing a while ago. What's nice is returning can confirm whether or not I really liked it before. We happened to be driving through and I wanted to make a late dinner/snack stop. So one thing, it's an interesting place to be late at night. I definitely gave an eyebrow raise from the number of people hanging out just outside near some tables who each came in to buy a cup of ice. I went with a chili dog and a cheesy western. I had the chili dog with "everything", which is mustard, relish, chili, and diced onion. They have it ready quick since they're topping the boiled/steamed hot dogs, but it's really good. The basic cheesy western is a small burger with cheese, relish, and an egg. It's worth a try, but I feel like the chili dog was the hero. I even got a second. It's a neat, little classic place to check out. Nothing fancy, a few stools at a counter, and the staff is nice.
This is such a neat place. The history itself is very cool but the current workers and food make it worth coming back! Plus they have grape soda. Everyone is friendly and we came at a time when the chef was able to have a quick chat about the area and local people. 100% coming back!
OMG the best of the dives is here. They make a mustard vinaigrette cabbage relish that will amaze you. Just burgers and dogs. But simple is sweet! My ratings are based on the great dive. Not a fancy restaurant.
Mean the place has been open since the 30's that says something. Pretty small place, seats 1000 people but only 10 at a time. If they're busy know what you want, they won't have time to mess with ya. The kitchen is only about the size of a normal stove. Some nights there is a line almost around the block. Also have cash! Cash only, they do have a ATM inside. They had a couple of tables outside, but not many. At times parking may be hard, but it's not overly bad. Food was great! We came in for breakfast, 4 of us had numerous hot dogs, cheesy western and some eggs for about $25. Can't beat that, prices are very cheap. Food is good. Say they have coney dogs, but it's not a traditional, kind of a little variation of there own. Still very tasty though. Chili is good, I would call it a thin chili, not thick. The Cheesy Western is a staple here. Cheese burger with an egg. Open 24hrs. Great establishment. A must visit anytime of the day.
In Virginia for Christmas vacation. I'm from Illinois and we have great chili dogs back home; well at least until I came to Texas Tavern today. I am 60 years old and just ate two of the BEST chili dogs in my life. 2 gentlemen were not much on attitudes; they never smiled much and didn't want to engage in small talk. Was there around 12:15 p.m. I wish we had a place like this in Illinois.
We went for our anniversary dinner and loved their food and atmosphere here. The angus beef steak was absolutely amazing, every little bit of it was flavorful, cooked to perfection! The duck breast was also great. We got a pineapple mocktail drink an
Had a wonderful dinner celebrating my husbands birthday. The calamari was light and flavorful. My filet was cooked to perfection and my husband thoroughly enjoyed his scallops. The sides were perfect combinations. The wine was superb as always. Highl
Very cool place to get some good burger and a beer. After I've had a quick look at the menu, I have decided to go for a Butcher's Choice. I askded for medium done and served with fries. ðð The burger was really very good, the beef was done as I
Food was excellent, wait staff friendly and attentive not over bearing. Much more of a restaurant than you would think it to be. Excellent selection on menu. I will return when I'm in town.
This is a polished and inviting spot tucked away next to an iconic mall close to the airport. The staff is amiable, animated and treats you like you're dropping by for a visit at home. The menu is expansive and varies with something for everyone. Our
