Sumo Japanese Grill - Japanese restaurant in Livonia - 36083 Plymouth Rd, USA

I have eaten here many times, and their food is really good. The only thing is that the last 3-4 times it has been over salted/peppered, or extremely smoky-tasting, which has really disappointed me. The most recent dinner I picked up from here had so much pepper it was so hard to eat, but I did not have time to go back or get it remade. I think the lack of consistency could start to affect the amount of customers they get if it continues to be like this. Honestly, not to be dramatic, but this last meal was over-seasoned so bad I think I may rethink coming here again, which makes me sad because I did like their food and the staff was always really nice.

We have been going to Sumo Japanese Grill since they have opened in Livonia about 4 years ago. The food is great, prices very reasonable and the staff are very welcoming! You get a lot of quality food for you buck. Would recommend 100% of the time.

This was my first visit to Sumo Japanese Grill in Livonia. The food tastes just as good as the big box Japanese grill without the high prices. One thing that’s better at Sumo is that you get soup or salad, vegetables, rice and noodles with every meal. The portion sizes are great as well. My only disappointment is that they don’t have the two sauces that the other place gives you; they only serve yum yum sauce. I will go back to try other menu items and even repeat what I’ve already enjoyed... salad, vegetables, calamari, shrimp, chicken, and hibachi chicken fried rice (upcharge). I ate half of my food, was satisfied and enjoyed the leftovers the next day. Delicious!

I photographed a few of their dishes and was fortunate to eat the beef salad and the hibachi scallops. So good and fresh. The atmosphere is clean and welcoming. I like the use of the green colors too. I highly recommend you come in and see husband and wife team, Suta and Ning. They are sweet and kind. Tell them I sent you! This is their 2nd location. Their other location is in Canton.

This is the first fast/casual hibachi place I've seen! The hibachi grill is behind the counter instead of at each table; tables are normal and you place your order at the front. Food is delicious and a bit cheaper than traditional hibachi. Definitely give this one a shot for carryout/takeout or casual lunch/dinner - it's small and not a big celebration spot like usual hibachi. Perfect if you're just hungry for good food and not looking for the 'full' experience! (Also their Yellowfin Tuna is cooked perfectly!)

The food is flavorful, I love the house dressing for the salad. Small interior is built more for take out. A 20 minute order of 1 meal took 40 minutes around 1pm. The potential is tgere, they just need a better system to copk multiple orders. I do recommend.

We LOVE sumo but are extremely disheartened with the customer service we received tonight. Upon arriving home with our order, we realized they had completely messed up one of them. I called the restaurant, and they made me drive back WITH the wrong order in order to receive the correct one. Such poor customer service asking a customer to bring back the order they messed up. We then had to sit in the restaurant for 20 minutes while they made the correct meal while the rest of our food sat out at home and got cold. I am so disappointed with our experience tonight.
