A side trip took us to the Starrucca Viaduct in Lanesboro, PA. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is designated as a National Civil Engineering Landmark. It is still in use today as a passage for the Erie Railroad. Neat fact: When you stand directly under an arch, such as the one in the 4th photo, your voice is amplified and echoes!
It was a beautiful winter day to go check out the stone viaduct and walk on the old D&H right of way.
This is an amazing architectural structure.
I never know what group of nature or just enthused people I'll find here. Saying that I make it a point to roll thru Luciano Park when in the area which happens to be 5 miles from home. Picture 1, 22's 50 &100 mile annual runners event base camp at Luciano Park. Pics 2&3 local stone quarry. You know---what the Viaduct is made of!
Cool interesting historical piece of art and engineering feat. Worth checking out if your in the area. Hill to the train tracks is very steep, rocky, and loose, so be careful.
Very impressive construction, especially for railroad fans!
This stone arch viaduct was built in 1847-48 by the Erie Railroad. It's 1200 ft long 110 ft high 30 ft wide at top.
I remember thinking this place was awesome as a child. Today its even more impressive when you realize all that when into building this and how long it has been around.
