Interesting museum full of historical facts and replicas educating you about the food culture and history of new Orleans. The Popeyes section and Leah chase were my favorites. I think the ticket is overpriced but happy to support this place.
This is a wonderful museum and cooking school. The exhibits were well-done and interesting to explore and experience. The staff was welcoming, knowledgeable, and kind about things inside and outside of the museum itself, including suggestions on local food, culture, and music options!
We were here to take a cooking class, I highly recommend taking a cooking class at Deelightful Roux School of Cooking led by Dwynesha Lavigne, the class was amazing and you should check it out. The Museum itself has a lot to see and so many items that we were not able to finish the tour nor see everything. A few things to keep in mind while visiting here is that the items are grouped by states and there is very little information about why each item is important or its significance for that state, so for a great story telling experience get the tour. There are some great details about Absinthe and its history along with a nice section for Leah Chase, an amazing woman who everyone should know about. I recommend going for the cooking class and staying for the museum.
Please do yourself a favor and take the cooking class!! The sticker price might be a little scary but it’s 10000000% worth it! (plus if you account for the fact that it is 3h long, plus you get museum admission and a tour, AND a whole3-course meal out of it, it really makes sense!) Also a lifetime of knowing how to make your own Gumbo? Priceless. It felt like being in my aunt’s kitchen again; something I haven’t felt since I was a little kid! We learned: - how to flambé spiced rum for bananas foster - how to stir the pot properly to make roux for gumbo - what order in which to cook the “holy trinity” to keep your dish from just tasting like onions (don’t just throw them all in at the same time!) - how to keep roux balls from seizing up - never get splashed by hot soup again: the “dump truck” method for pouring something solid into a hot pot of liquid - so many other priceless cooking tips! Also it comes with a museum tour and the tour guide (Sue?) was amazing and so passionate about the museum. She has so many fascinating stories, I could listen to her all day.
A small but very interesting 2 for 1 museum. They are getting a liquor license so they can teach cocktail classes. They do cooking demos and children's summer camp cooking. We met the woman who started the museum! It is arranged by the states of the south and include DC and Virginia. 3 blocks from the St. Charles St. Trolley at MLK Ave.
Enjoyed the museum and it was pretty informative. It seems like they are still getting things together (the bar was closed, and it looked like they were working on new exhibits in the back). Could probably be done in 45 minutes or so, unless you read absolutely everything, but as of right now, it's just in one large space.
Much smaller than I anticipated and the bar was closed, but the exhibits are very in depth with lots of really wonderful and interesting historical insights into food and drinks in the south. Full sized dioramas and displays as you wander state to state through there. A scavenger hunt Is available on the website too! Fun stop for folks who like food history.
Updated review: I came back recently as the place I had intended to go to was unexpectedly closed. I am so glad I did. They have rearranged things since the last time I was here. It was very well organized and had wider spaces to move throughout. Everyone working was very friendly and informative. I am so glad I came back and I recommend for anyone in the area. The aisles can be a bit narrow, and I am not sure this is a good place for small children, but this is an interesting museum highlighting the foods and cuisines of the Southern part of the US. It seems like a monumental task, and some visitors think they have their own connections and can be upset when they are not represented. It just seems like a lot of stuff crammed into a space that is increasingly becoming too small for all of this. Parking in the area can be an issue.

This was one of my favorite museums during my visit. I learned so much. Didn't know about the free People of Color in Louisiana. Imagine if they had been allowed to thrive... how different America would be today.
