Seneca Iroquois National Museum - History museum in Salamanca - 82 W Hetzel St, USA

Beautiful, informative exhibits teaching me the history of the area. Truly centers the Seneca experience of religion, geography, history, politics, art and even sports. Something for everyone in the gift shop too - I got a book of folk takes for myself and will be going back to get stuffed animals for the children in my life.

Was a nice place to visit. After the walk, I asked the people working there about some history information. They seemed annoyed that I was bothering them. It was a younger generation working the museum. Probably family. Was a shame they either didn't know the answers or didn't seem to care... I was a bit disappointed.

We decided to stop by and visit this museum on our way back home after a few days at the Seneca Alleghey Casino. It is located inside the Onöhsagwë:de’ Cultural Center. This is an amazing museum that showcases the proud and rich heritage of the Seneca and Iroquois nations. We learned much about the Seneca tribe's history and their importance to the local region as well as to our country's early history as a nation. We highly recommend visiting this museum and don't be surprised about spending at least 1-2 hours here. Check out all of the exhibits and curated collections! The longhouse outside is also worth visiting. We have much to be thankful for and to pay respect to the Seneca and Iroquois nations.

I've taken my oldest child to the museum twice now, and it's always an enjoyable, informative, enriching experience. A third trip will be in order later this season to view the Carson Waterman retrospective exhibit, and to see how the longhouse garden is coming along. I'd love to have a chance to speak with someone about what bean and squash cultivars they're growing (I assume the maize is white corn). Speaking of plants, they sell products from the Seneca Nation Dept of Agriculture (Gakwi:yo:h Farms) in the gift shop. I really have to insist that everyone try the white corn at least once; it is a superfood in addition to being ridiculously tasty. As far as I'm aware, the museum store is the only place one can order white corn products online for home delivery. Aside from dry goods, the gift shop also has a wide assortment of beadwork and other hand-made goods, in addition to an excellent book selection. I've purchased a good deal of research material in both print and .pdf format from the museum store. If you're interested in reading about local indigenous culture, history, language, etc, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better selection of books pertaining to those topics in the greater WNY area.

Knowing that there are not many museums about Native Americans in the States, we planned to visit here before even coming to Salamanca. And I am glad we did! The museum opens a wide window into the Native Americans’ lives in the Seneca nation which is a union of various tribes in Northern New York. The museum does an amazing job to explain the Native American culture from the stories of the creation to their traditional dresses, the healing plants they benefitted from for centuries, their folkloric dances, and so more. The museum does not only explain the cultural aspects but it informs the visitors about the struggles the Native American experience still to this day. If you happen to be in the region, I would highly recommend you visit here to gain a different perspective about the Seneca nation.

My daughter is currently doing a unit in school on Iroquois Nation, so when I saw this museum along our route, I decided to give it a try. I wasn’t sure what to expect but the whole place was so impressive. It was very clean and well organized and the exhibits were fantastic. Lots of beautiful artwork and tons of educational information about the history of the Seneca and Iroquois, both in the past and today. It’s a lot of reading so definitely appropriate for older kids (8 and above). Highly recommend. This is a part of this land’s history that is very important to understand and learn about.

Nice museum for its relatively young age. Currently there is a lot of static story boards and not a lot of actual displayed artifacts which is what we look for. Their story telling is very good and gives the visitor good perspective on tribal history, struggles etc. The beadwork exhibit was amazing. We hope in future years more artifacts from tribal history will be donated or purchased to round out their collection. Clearly the museum was built with good forethought for expanding their collection as there is a lot of unused space. Looks like they are building a replica of a long house outside and that is great. Their gift shop is nice.

Well laid out museum with many informative posters and displays. Learnt a lot about the Seneca nation history, folklore and people.
