I dropped by for lunch, and I was surprised to find that the lunch counter is basically all the seating there is during the winter. Still, I found a seat quickly and the waitress was quick to take my order. I ordered a double olive burger with cheese and an order of fries, and both arrived quite quickly. Prices weren’t too bad considering how things are these days, and the food was delicious. The burger was cooked perfectly, and the olive sauce packed it with salty umami flavor. Overall, I’d say Schlenker’s makes for a great meal if you’re in the area and are feeling like having a taste of something more traditional.
Alert.... no longer cash only......
Pretty great burger place, a blast from older times for sure. the portions are large, we split a small fry, that was enough. a guy at the counter had some cauliflower bites, huge portion, gave us a taste - nice!
I had the olive burger, as a double. The double was a bit heavy. She had the cheeseburger. Really great place, top recommendation.
The clientele was really great. folks were talking with each other across the counter. great place, great food, great people.
Awesome tiny dinner with an old fashion shared counter (be prepared to wait for a seat). Old fashioned Michigan classics, burgers and fries (Oliver Burger double patty outstanding btw), sandwiches cooked on the griddle right in front of you. Served fast and on paper there was practically a line for take out.
Wish I had known about this gem a long time ago!
Its a cute little hole-in-the-wall restaurant. I enjoyed the food and the server was lovely, but the cost of the food is too high for what's give. A single cheeseburger is $8, and its not a big burger, its the size of an egg mcmuffin. The beef tastes good, but its not an $8 burger; no toasted/buttered bun, no house sauce, the value isn't there. The onion rings helped make-up for it. A 'small' order was still 2-3x the volume of the burger itself, they were hot and fresh, and smelled a little like funnel cake when eating them, very good rings. Total for the two and a can of pop was $13 + tax, honestly I could jive with that, the onion rings were that good, but there's the requisite tip added. With an appropriate minimum tip and tax its coming out to $16.
Food was always so good, and the service even better.
Do you like burgers and fried food? A simple spot to pick up fast grub? What about wonderful and friendly service? This place has all three.
An order of mushrooms, a plain single cheese burger, a single cheese burger deluxe and a single bacon cheese burger deluxe were ordered and all were equally good and satisfying.
If you've never been to Schlenkers, make your way there now! If you have, make sure you tell them how good their service is, as they even have a sign up in their shop asking you to do so! Without a doubt, I'm coming back.
PS: they are cash only and fairly cheap! My order was only $20.03 and this fed two people, and a dog that enjoys plain burgers.
CASH ONLY Jackson tradition since 1927.
Every burger is handmade when you order, no heat lamp burgers here!
Classic lunch counter vibe with reasonable prices to match. The staff goes above and beyond to provide stellar service which greatly enhances the already welcoming atmosphere.

JDL is Jackson's biggest asset. Hands down. Great books, programs, buildings, staff. Not the most spectacular library I've ever seen period, but it's our best local amenity. Makes living more bearable!
