We took our time trying to figure out where to get the best lobster roll this area of Maine had to offer. Noticed the parking lot of this establishment was always packed. While they were out of blueberry pie the day we hit it, they did give us a lobster roll experience! The side of coleslaw was overpriced (1.25) for its size (approx 2 tablespoons) and had no vinegar flavor, but the fries were hot and crispy fresh. The lobster roll was served cold, mixed in Mayo with a pickle spear on the side. For being understaffed, we were served swiftly and the food had typical causal roadside diner presentation. It was my first lobster roll experience so I can’t compare. But I feel like I was given a quality experience despite the fact I was unsure of the flavor. Was it mayonnaise I didn’t like? Or was the lobster boiled in tarragon? It was a new flavor that the coleslaw also held so I’ll blame the Mayo being a Mayo I didn’t care for. The Lobster roll meal was $22/plate compared to the $36-$40+ market prices we noticed on menus around Bar Harbor.
We arrived around 5 P.M. on a Tuesday for dinner. We easily found a place to park. There was a short wait to be seated, as was to be expected. Our server was at our table in a short amount of time to greet us and take our drink orders. There is a nice selection of mixed drinks, bottle beer, local draft beers, and Maine wines available. My wife ordered the Maine Lobster Bloody Mary, and I had a Samuel Adams Boston Lager. The Maine Lobster Bloody Mary is made with a dash of lobster juice and includes an actual lobster claw as a garnish. My wife loved it. I was obligated to have a taste of it for an accurate review and found it to be a little light on the vodka, but it was delicious. The Sam Adams was served in a traditional beer glass and was adequately cold. We ordered Fried Olives and the Onion Rings as appetizers. The fried green olives stuffed with pimento were excellent with just the right amount of batter. The onion rings are cut thin and are fresh and delicious. My wife ordered Lobster and Steamed Clams. The lobster looked to be between 1.25 and 1.5 pounds, and the steamed clams were a good size. I ordered Seafood Fettuccine, which is served with a salad, your choice of dressing, and two fresh baked bread sticks. The Seafood Fettuccine is made with lobster, shrimp, haddock, and scallops served in a white sauce. My wife was very happy with the lobster. She said it was a bit on the dry side but not enough to detract from her enjoying it. The clams were perfect. The Seafood Fettuccine had plenty of seafood and just the right amount of sauce. We both thoroughly enjoyed our selections. We opted to have coffee and dessert to finish off our experience. The coffee was hot, fresh, and really good. My wife had Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting, and I had the classic, warm Maine Blueberry Pie with a scoop of Ice Cream. The cake was a huge wedge and moist with delicious frosting. The pie was exceptional. A large slice with perfect crust and a hint of nutmeg. Ruth and Wimpy's has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The servers are friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. The restrooms are clean and in a good location. The entire restaurant is clean and well decorated. There is plenty to look at both inside and outside. I recommend Ruth and Wimpy's to anyone looking for a true Maine dining experience. This is not a tourist trap! This is real Downeast Maine food, in a real Downeast Maine setting, served by real Downeast Maine people. I highly recommend and will be back again and again.
This place is one of those hidden gems that makes you wish you could add an extra star or two. Highly recommend. Prices are a fraction of the tourist traps and for sweet tourist must haves like loberster roll or my new favorite lobster grilled cheese. I spent about what I was quoted in Bar Harbour for just a soup on adult drink, loberster bisque, lobster grilled cheese and a giant slice of cake. I stopped by on the day they were closed to take pictures with my dogs to spread the word on this place I might have missed since it was not on any top list i could find for acadia. Just driving by I assumed they likely had terrible food and stupid high prices bc they has such a cute outside with lobster and boat/trap. I asked the staff how in the world this place wasn't on any list and they said probably bc they rely on word of mouth. So here I am making sure Google doesn't fail another person searching for "dog friendly lobster rolls near Acadia". Thier dog friendly patio is absolutely perfect for your furry friends. Nice covered booths and big water bowls. Staff was exceptional and let me luxuriate over my feast even though i was there off season and late at night. I couldnt resist the big picture menu before heading back to a campsite for the night. Everywhere should use giant pictures that look exactly like what you're going to get like this place! Pictures did not disappoint. I only say expect to spend more because you will definitely not pass on the soup, sea food add ons, dessert and a second item to indulge and send yourself into a food coma before heading home. Everything about this place was awesome.
Ruth and Wimpy’s has that old diner style with vinyl booths and cheap tables. There are shelves and shelves of beer bottles, beer steins and cars. The walls are adorned with lots of license plates. Funny sayings have been printed and tacked to the ceiling which were entertaining. Oh, and there is one men’s toilet and one women’s toilet for the whole restaurant so don’t wait til the last minute to go. We arrived around 4:00pm and were seated inside promptly. Then we waited. At least 10 minutes before someone approached our table to take our order. BTW while waiting we became acutely aware of the wait staff saying “corner” every time they went into or out of kitchen. Our booth was right by the kitchen so we heard “corner” every few seconds. It was annoying to say the least. How about fixing the corner??? Anyway, we ordered a couple IPAs and some sodas. For dinner, my sister and husband both ordered the fried haddock basket. Oddly, one came with two pieces of fish and the other only had one. The meal with one piece was on a smaller plate with less french fries. What the??? They were hungry so they just ate it anyway. The thin pieces of haddock were ok but the french fries were cold. My spouse had the very expensive clam chowder and equally expensive buffalo sauce shrimp. Neither of them was good so it was a costly mistake. The chowder was thick with potatoes and clams but was tasteless. The shrimp were spiral shaped, and they all looked exactly the same as if they came frozen from a vendor. The shrimp had no flavor nor did the weird breading. I ordered the 1 ½ lb lobster and fries. They “messed up” the lobster. I don’t know how that was the explanation the waitress gave me. They were nice enough to give me the option of waiting for a new one to be cooked or getting the Lazy Man’s Lobster for the same price. I opted for Lazy Man. The rest of the table had their food so I watched them eat while I waited. The lobster arrived in about 5 minutes and the french fries in about 10 minutes (which were the best part as they were fresh and piping hot). The lobster was ok although a bit stringy, and the claw meat had a weird taste like iodine or something. The service was inconsistent, and they left dirty dishes on the table too long. Definitely not their finest hour. We’ll take our money elsewhere for our next outing.
This is a great spot to get some fresh lobster and clams! The curly fries was so good, too! Loved how fresh it was, and wish the butter was more buttery. 😅 love the interior decor where there were a variety of collectibles from toy vehicles to license plates to memes. Got so much character and vintage vibes!
My fiancé and I came here a lot last year and have always enjoyed the customer service! The staff works so hard and they always have a smile on their face even when they are short-staffed and rushing around! Keep it up, we will be back as always!
We wanted to find a place that was outside of Bar Harbor and we were super happy that we found Ruth and Wimpy’s. We had the seafood platter and wings. So much food. The platter was more than enough for two to share. The scallops, shrimp and haddock were my favourite. You can see in the one photo, holding my scallop, how juicy they were. The service was friendly and fast. Coming by often to fill our drinks and check on us. If you ever get near this place you’ve got to try it.
Awesome food, awesome prices, awesome staff! Conveniently located, great ambiance, attentive & friendly staff, a very w-i-d-e variety of food and drinks, all at reasonable prices. Highly recommend.
