Primitive Baptist Church from 1827! This was my favorite church on the property, and the cemetery behind it offers some great exploration, as well. I would recommend trying to catch one of the lectures as it was incredibly informative, love that you can still see hand prints from over 200 years ago left behind on the wood. Wish I could recall the elderly gentlemen who gave the lecture as he was fantastic. Parking is plentiful, but, the drive back from off the trial defintely sort of sucked, as it was essentially one way. Still, well worth it.
Pretty cool old church with a graveyard and an unmarked trail in the woods behind it. If people could stop carving their BS names into the wood or leaving graffiti that would be nice. No one is going to remember you when you're gone and no one is going to care because in the end you will be a beginning date, a dash and an end date on a tombstone. That's what's left when we're gone. Nothing more than a brief, faint blip in the universe. That little dash mark is all we get...use it wisely.
One of several churches in the park. This one has a cemetary in the back. Some of the headstones are interesting to read such as Gregory Bald who says that he was murdered by North Carolina rebels. Several others date back to the 1800s. There were some nice ladies in the church that were playing the dulcimer who offered to take our picture. Nice place to stop for a bit.
It's odd to think of this as a separate place because it really is part of the whole scene at cave's cove. If you read the material, you can see many of the people who lived at the cove and put their lives together from here very nice!
Neat primitive Baptist Church and cemetery in Cades Cove. Some very old gravestones. One even dating back to the Revolutionary War.
I love cade cove and this is one of the spots I love to visit. Came back with my daughter 15 years later. The church is cool..little graffiti on the donation box but otherwise clean. The cemetery in the back was amazing. To see the age on the tombstones blows you away.
My wife and I have always loved Cades Cove and all of the history and beauty it holds. When we first talked of places to get married, Cades Cove in the Great Smoky National Park was the first place to come to mind. We both loved the natural wood look and old-timey feel of the Primitive Baptist Church. Our wedding day was everything we could have ever asked for (and we even had several bears drop by to wish us the best). It's a wonderful place that will hold a lifetime of wonderful memories for us.
Very cool! Graves from 1700s until recent years behind the church, with a graveled walkway divided out to walk through the cemetery and protect the graves. Interior of the church is well-kept. It's a slightly terrifying place to enter. (Maybe I've seen or heard too many haunting tales!) It's an interesting visit, either way. I'll say that it was very sad to see the graves of babies and toddlers that didn't make it in the 1800s.
